Before You Leave Home

Camera and bag checkCharge your batteries and bring 1 or 2 extras; this is a very long shoot and the cold weather will drain you batteriesBring a big memory card; reformatted and ready to go (How many time have you forgotten to reformat before shooting?)A tripod and/or monopod

Many places will not allow you to use tripods due to the crowds so you may have to resort to bracing yourself against a solid object12/4/2015

Before You Leave Home Cont’d.Appropriate

clothing to stay warm, remember no complaining and it will get colder after darkRemember glovesFAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH YOUR CAMERA AND KNOW HOW TO OPERATE IN MANUAL MODE AND MANUAL FOCUSING!!!The lights can trick a cameras focusing so use manual focusing if possible

LensesSuggested lenses:

Wide angle between 16 and 24mm24-70mmMaybe a 70-200 but you probably won’t use itA fisheye would be fun if you have oneOther Gear:A circular polarizer to cut window reflections

You might want to bring a small piece of black felt (around 12 inches square), or something similar, to wrap around the front of the lens to shade the lens from reflections when shooting through glass (windows).

Some Suggested SettingsManual settings are

bestSomething around ISO 800, f5.6, 1/15 second and anti-shake if you have itRemember to turn off lens and in-camera anti-shake features when on a tripod. Aperture priority is an alternative for single shots if you don’t feel comfortable with manual settings

In-camera noise reduction is not recommended since it takes too much time and can result in missed shotsShoot in Live View if your camera has that capability and you’re on a tripod

Brace the camera against your body when not on tripod (No Live View since you can’t control the camera very well)12/4/20157Slide8

Some Suggested Settings Cont’d.If not using live view, make sure your mirror is locked or delayed (2 second shutter delay) before shooting with longer shutter speeds if your camera has that capability. Live View automatically locks the mirror.

Use focus peeking to achieve good focus if your camera has the capabilitySet your camera’s LCD to display the HistogramUse the Histogram to set the proper shutter speed after setting the ideal F-stop and ISOA properly exposed shot will have a histogram that is not bunched to one sideNote that the bright city lights will cause a spike in the Histogram to the right and the dark areas of the scene will cause an even bigger area on the left side. Adjust your shutter speed to prevent the highlights from bunching to the right (blown-out highlights) and use bracketing to offset for the loss of detail in the shadows
