Critical/Analytical vs. Personal Response

You will be required to do at least one each per unit, my friends. Slide2

Critical responses are based on what THE AUTHOR was doing to get a point across. Critical elements in a story are how the author used elements (author’s style) such as irony, metaphor, simile, imagery, characterization, climax, conflict, tone, foreshadowing,

pt

of view, setting or symbols (all defined on in your “short story” notes

Example: Oscar Meyer’s sarcastic tone in his article “One Direction: The Band to Define a Nation” suggests that readers should ingest the article with more than a hint of satire. Meyer did not write the piece to be taken seriously, as demonstrated in the line, “Harry Styles’ decision to wear the English flag on his tattered ‘T’ sends a message to international fans that England will once again conquer the world as it had in 16

th

century (8)”. Slide3

Personal responses are compositions (essays, journals, diaries, paragraphs, memoirs) where the pronoun “I” may be utilized. Students relate a piece of literature to their own experiences, memories, or thoughts.

Example: I completely disagree with Oscar Meyer’s point that the band “One Direction” does not represent their home country when touring the world. The fact that

Louis

Tomlinson has an English accent is one of the many reasons I taped a poster of him in my top desk drawer. Slide4

You will need to write a PERSONAL, CRITICAL and PERSUASIVE piece on the grade 12 diploma, so we will have lots to practice throughout the year. Slide5

Is this example critical/analytical or personal?

“The poem’s main appeal is the juxtaposition of fantasy and realism in its characterization and setting. “Slide6

“Belle’s rebellion when leaving the Beast’s castle is similar to the rebellion I showcased in grade two, when I rode my bike too far from home to prove a point. “Slide7

The personal response should take about 30-40 minutes to write. Each new idea and reflection should have its own paragraph. Typical structures:

Intro- unifying effect at the end of intro, like a thesis.

Para 2: What the character goes through (reference literature)Para 3: What you personally have gone through

Para 4: Compare character and yourself and make a concluding remark. If 2 different ideas, make 2 different paragraphs.

OR

Commentary on what a section of the piece means to you. Each idea should still have its own paragraph.

If you are referencing only one text, reference it in the introduction, then just add page
