The River Danube – A main waterway across Europe

About the Danube … The Danube is one of Europe's great rivers-and since the Main-Danube Canal opened in 1992, ships have been able to navigate all the way from Amsterdam to the Black Sea.

ULM A city in the German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg which is situated at the point where the rivers Blau and Iller join the Danube. There is a solar-powered ferry that crosses the Danube 7 days a week in the summer

REGENSBURG The city is situated between Nuremberg and Passau; two to three days' cruising distance from Vienna and Budapest . Local river cruises also are popular with visitors. The “Regensburg” and other cruise ships of the local Ship Company offer many cruising opportunities, such as: sightseeing cruises Walhalla excursions (private companies) Breakfast, brunch, dinner, dance, and Christmas-season cruises. These special cruises take place on specific dates .

VIENNA It can be comfortably explored from the water: from April to October the DDSG Blue Danube-> offers sightseeing tours on the Danube Canal and Danube River on five boats. A tip for cool days: the Danube Canal tour can also be enjoyed in the winter months of November and December on board the comfortably warm MS Schlögen .

BRATISLAVA Numerous boat services including transport to and from both the cities Budapest and Vienna can be found in Bratislava, as well as sight seeing ferries and leisure boat rides. Summer time leisure cruises to Gabcíkovo and Devin are also popular. An Austrian company with their catamaran the Twin City Liner provides an additional connection from Bratislava to Vienna .

BUDAPEST The first public steamships started to operate on the Danube in 1820 between Vígadó square and Óbuda . In the 1880's ships transported 4 million passengers per year. This number decreased to a third in 1920, and there were only 53,000 passengers in the 1990's.

Public transport boats started from 1st of July 2012 3 new lines , run by Budapest Transport Company (BKV) two on weekdays, called D11 and D12 one at the weekend, named D13. On weekdays ships depart every 20 minutes. Fares: On weekdays: free with a daily , weekly or monthly ticket At weekends: all passengers need to buy a ticket before departure. A ticket costs 400 HUF ( ca . 1, 4 €). Passengers under 6 and over 65 years old travel for free.
