The aerial photo below shows the scene of a fatal bus/pedestrian accident in Renton Washington

Bus Path

Pedestrian PathSlide3

The bus approached from the west, in the left turn lane seen below. A young mother walked from left to right on the far side of the intersection.

The blind areas from directly above the operatorSlide5

This photo was taken by King County Metro, on approach to the intersection in the bus involved in the fatal crash. Please note that the pillar hides more than a small pedestrian; it hides more than half the high-rise building which the pedestrian passed by. The next slide shows this scene from above.Slide6

The blind angles, building partially obscured, and the pedestrian.

The BusSlide7

This is another photo from the bus involved. The agency intended this to show that a pedestrian could be seen. The example pedestrian is a safety officer, well over 6 feet tall and twice the weight of the victim. 18 copies of him can be hidden behind the pillar with the bus close to the intersection.Slide8

The next photo in the series was taken with the both the bus and pedestrian at the edges of the intersection. Even this close, 12 copies of the pedestrian can be hidden by just the pillar.Slide9

The same scene, now viewed from above, with the bus and pedestrian at the edges of the intersection. Slide10

At this range, even a bus making the same crossing as the pedestrian would be hidden behind the pillar

KC took a panoramic sequence of the scene just prior to the location of impact. Due to air brake delay, fully depressing the brake pedal at this point would not result in any deceleration until after impact. Even this close, two-and-a-half of the large example-pedestrians could be hidden.

The motion of the bus, gradually pulling to a stop at the red light, swept the blind spots through the scene, revealing every inch of the sidewalks and crosswalks, free of any pedestrians. However, the slow pace tracked the slow pace of the young mother who died beneath the rear wheels.

The following sequence was based upon video from the bus involved, which established its location second by second. The scene was laid-out using aerial photos, engineering drawings and on-scene measurements. Frames are one per second.Slide13
