Rebekah Tanner, MLS MAA. SUNY Oswego. March 2015. Our understanding of loss, grief and depression and their impact upon identity has been aided by discoveries in neuroscience and related fields. Techniques of self-reflection, meditation and mindfulness have proven to be successful, non-medical interventions across time, space and cultural differences. In the context of psychological practice, these methods are generally employed absent the spiritual contexts from which the practices themselves arose including Quakerism, Native American practices, those of Celtic and Jewish origin, as well as several schools of Buddhism. Studying mindfulness in this broader context offers clinicians opportunities to increase their awareness and thereby, enhance their cultural competencies. Empirical evidence supports the use of cognitive based mindfulness therapies to prevent depression relapse. More recent research shows promise as well with clients in a current depressive episode, those with treatment-resistant depression, as well as in children suffering from anxiety, and for grieving individuals. . .
