Levels of organization

SWBAT determine the correct order of the levels of organization for structure and function, including

cells

tissues

organs

organ systems

whole organisms

ecosystemsSlide2

Over the past few weeks…

We learned cells

are the building blocks of life

We have discussed different types of cells and how they function

Now, we will see the next step in “building” organisms!

The next few weeks, we will discuss all the different types of body systems that humans (and other organisms) have that allow for life to occurSlide3

Levels of Organization Slide4

Organization of the Body

We can compare organization of a book to the body

The book = The human body

A Chapter=

An organ

system

A Paragraph=

The organs

The words=

The tissues

The letters= the cellsSlide5

Cells

Different body tissues and organs are made up of different kinds of cells.

The

cells in similar tissues and organs in other animals are similar to those in human beings but differ somewhat from cells found in plants.

Brain Cell

Cardiac (heart) muscle cell

Slide6

Cells

The smallest part of living things

All living things must be made up of cells

Examples: brain cells, cardiac cells, skin cells, brain cells, muscle cells…

Brain Cell

Cardiac (heart) muscle cell

Slide7

Tissue

Groups

of

similar cells work to

form a tissue, such as

muscle

tissue. Slide8

Organ

Different tissues are in turn grouped together to form larger functional units, called organs.

Example: Heart, brain, lungs, etc. Slide9

Organ System

Organs group together to form

systems, such as the circulatory system, which pumps blood through the heart

The

circulatory system is made up of organs - the heart, veins, arteries, etc. Slide10

Organism

All organ systems

group together to form

organisms.

Example:

humansSlide11

Ecosystem – a community of living organisms

All

of the

organisms in an area make up the ecosystem of that area

Example: Amazon Rainforest in BrazilSlide12

Cell Specialization

Each type of cell, tissue, organ, organ system

has a distinct structure and functions

that serve the organism as a whole.

Specialized cells perform specialized functions in multi-cellular organisms Slide13

3 Important Facts

Complete the bottom box on your notes page to sum up what you think were the most important parts of today’s lessonSlide15

Check For understanding

Dry-erase boards Slide16

Partner Practice

You will answer questions with your partner

After I read the question, you will discuss at noise level 1

Do NOT raise your boards until I say soSlide17

???????????

Every living organism is made of one or

a)cells

b)organs

.

c) organ

systems.

d) tissues

.Slide18

?????????????

One reason that multicellular organisms are more complex than unicellular organisms is that similar cells are grouped together to perform a specific task. When cells are arranged this way, what do they form?

a)tissues

b)organelles

c)organs

d)organ

systemsSlide19

???????????

Which of the following is organized from simplest to most complex

?

a

. cells->organs->organ systems->tissues->the organism

b

. cells->tissues->organs->organ systems->the

organism

c

. the organism->organ systems->organs->tissues->cells

d

. tissues->cells->organs->organ systems->the organismSlide20

????????

Which is larger and more complex: cardiac muscle tissue or the circulatory system?Slide21

?????????

Which is less complex: a brain cell or a brain tissue?Slide22

????????

What does a group of tissues create?Slide23

??????????

What does a group of organs create?Slide24

?????????????

What does a group of organ systems create?Slide25

??????????

What is an example of a specialized cell?Slide26

??????????

Are the specialized cells we just talked about prokaryotes or eukaryotes?
