VISION SCREENINGAT SCHOOL DURING COVID-19
Early vision screenings are very important and can serve as an early warning that an eye exam may be necessary. Often an Eyecare Professional or a volunteer group will perform these screens at school.

Slide3WHY VISION SCREENING?Vision problems have been shown to adversely affect a child’s achievement in school.
Myopic (nearsighted) children have trouble reading blackboard notes
Hyperopic (farsighted) children will have trouble reading or doing any kind of close work.
Additionally, several types of eye disorders can lead to permanent visual impairment if not identified and treated early by an eye doctor. (Amblyopia – “lazy eye”)
Slide4Amblyopia or “Lazy Eye”
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) is the most common
cause of vision loss in kids
Preventable and treatable
IF
detected early
Amblyopia is a condition in which the brain does not fully recognize or acknowledge the images sent to it by the amblyopic eye.
If it is not detected and treated early enough in life, amblyopia can cause a permanent loss of vision and depth perception.
Image seen by an amblyopic eye is blurred
Can be mild to severe
Slide5Tools commonly used to cover the eye during screening:
PEEKING !
FALSE NEGATIVES
CROSS CONTAMINATION
Slide6Why you should not use these!
False Negative readings
Peeking!
Allowing the child to cover their own eye allows the child to PEEK! Viewing the chart with both eyes nullifies the results.
Health concerns during
COVID-19
Cross – Contamination
Do not use the same occluding device on multiple children.
Slide7SIMPLE SOLUTION:Reduce risk of error induced by peeking
– Use an adhesive patch when testing
Eliminate Cross-Contamination
- Use an adhesive patch when testing
Reduce False Negative results
- Use an adhesive patch when testing
FRESNEL SCREENING PATCHES
Temporary Occlusion Patch
Slide8< 1% of testers use an adhesive patch to occlude one eye during testing
