NA-CONS Study: Mandate

Deliver

a comprehensive proposal

for the North Experimental Area consolidation, including:All Beam related itemsInfrastructure & General ServicesCivil EngineeringThe Study shall propose implementation scenarios with all possible staging options, considering separately the periods:prior and during LS2 (highlighting urgent actions)between LS2 and LS3as well as during LS3

4Identify most urgent items 2017/2018 and secure budgetDefine WBS/PBS and prepare related project documents

Discuss with concerned groups & participate to the

safety diagnostic (carried out by EN-DSO)

Identify

Consolidation/Upgrade activities together with resources and budget

needs

Flammable Gas Detection - SAFETY

BE-ICS

in NA-CONS

Safety = priority 1 (hopefully)Several meetings with EN-DSO, HSE, EPNew distribution of flammable gas detectors in EHN1 (D. Jaillet 83

rd EATM)Still 2 gas barracks (907, 909) but with less detectors (more inert gases)

2 mixing zones on Jura side + 2 mixing zones on Salève side

All PPE zones reviewed along H2, H4, H6 & H8 beam lines.

PPE zones of Jura side already treated, commissioned & validated (HSE)

Finalizing requirements for the

Salève

side. Hope for commissioning during next

YETS

EHN2, ECN3: no particular requirement. Usual

maintenanceECN3: hydrogen detection in the cavern (mixing area) and barrack (bldg. 918)

Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) & CO2 -

SAFETY

BE-ICS in

NA-CONSODH risk in underground galleries - EHN1Gas network for nitrogen, argon, CO2, heliumNo air circulation in the galleriesCalculations for massive leaks: O2 from 21% to 18% in 72 sec.Time to escape, no needs for safety mask, but requires:Access control (already implemented) + ODH portable + CO2 detectionNeeds for ventilation. To be discussed with EN-CVODH risk in EHN2 galleries

Obsolete system but no plan for renovation before 2020 (LS2)ODH risk in ECN3 experimental cavern

Fully renovated in 2015. Detection in the krypton area. Possible upgrade (LS2)

Fire Detection - SAFETY

BE-ICS in

NA-CONS

Already in the framework of the SPS fire safety projectRisk to be assessed by HSE, status report requiredDetection technology to be deployedFire doors? Segmentation along beam lines? ….not necessary same needs than SPSIssues already known:Absence of smoke evacuation in the NA beam tunnelsObsolete sprinklersSurface buildings: Evacuation alarm to be renovated

30 km of PVC pipe (air sampling network) must be removed

When? Post LS2. LS2 already heavily loaded

Cryogenics Installations -

TE-CRG

Meeting may 25

th with D. Delikalis & M. Capeans (TE-PPR)Items already treated (maintenance or consolidation):All compressors and cold boxes are OKUNICOS migration already performed for all the cryo controlsNA62 consolidation (LN2 transfer line for liquid krypton, valves) doneTo be consolidated or wishes to be:6 centrifugal pumps for experimental SC magnets (6x150 kCHF)

Urgent: 3.3kV cells for control and compressors (bldg. 895) -> EN-ELStop renting and purchase large LN2 storages

(2x20000 l + 1x50000 l)-> 440 kCHF (from a 2014 cost estimate): long term savings…

TE-CRG will prepare work units description by mid-July

Magnets -

TE-MSC

Current situation:

426 beam line magnets in totalSpares magnets are available for almost all the familiesActivities to be done for 2017: zero-field probe replacement, exchange of manifolds, ELETTA refurbishing, renovation of electrical interconnectionsPossible safety audit:Inspection not needed: TE-MSC aware of all the issues related to safety and reliabilityKnown issues: electrical safety conformity, water leaks, shimming of the coils, replacement of polyurethane pads for the magnets

supports

Energy Balance program upgrade:The program should be validated

by

physicists

Only ~116 solid yoke magnets can be replaced by laminated

ones

Some of these magnets are of the same families as for

the

EA

Future actions:

TE-MSC to provide to EN-DSO past history of leaks/incidents

TE-MSC to prepare work unit description

EN-DSO to update risk assessment and issue

recommendations

Civil Engineering -

SMB-SE

Issues which can potentially be included in the consolidation program

:Infiltration of ground water in the tunnelsMotorized doors renovationFalse floorsDrainage networksRoofsIn case of upgrade, all the works will be contemplated in the context of the equipment groups/users future requirements;

Items that should be included in possible safety diagnostic:

Systems for smoke evacuation (sky domes more appropriate than extraction)

Presence of asbestos

Future actions:

EN-EA to contact TSOs and users of all NA buildings

SMB-SE to fill in the work unit description

documents

Cooling & Ventilation -

EN-CV

EN-CV group is well advanced in terms of identification of consolidation activities. Three work unit description documents were received a month ago.

The activities for 2017/2018:TDC2/TCC2 ventilation: 5/8 power cubicles already done. Renew remaining 3 power cubicles during YETS 2017/2018Chilled water renovation all along the years except during LS2BA80 and BA82: soft start of the pumpsActivities planned for LS2:

Chilled water pipe renovation

Renovation of the cooling towers power control system (building 893)

Replace backing of the cooling towers

Activities post-LS2:

Renovation of the ventilation system of all surface buildings (BAs)

Work on the compressed air system during the YETS and EYETS

Renovation of the Ventilation system of the gas building

Continue the soft start of the pumps

Future actions:

EN-CV to provide remaining work unit description

documents
