Using Your Camera’s Exposure to Create Dramatic Affects

What is Exposure?
In digital
photography,
exposure is the unit of measurement for the total amount of light permitted to reach the electronic sensor during the process of taking a photograph. The two main controls your digital camera uses to control exposure are the shutter speed and aperture. However, ISO is also used. Slide3
Perfect Exposure
Perfect exposure is achieved when the lighting of a photograph is not too bright or too dark, but just right.Slide4
Histograms
Before you take a photograph on your camera, you can view a histogram which will illustrate how much light is in the photo. When your photo has perfect lighting, or exposure, the histogram will indicate this.Slide5
Taking Advantage of Exposure
While, for many photos, reaching perfect exposure is the goal, under and overexposure can be used to create dramatic photographic affects.Slide6
Remember…
Remember that there are two main controls which control exposure: shutter speed and aperture.
Shutter speed
is the time for which a shutter is open at a given setting. Aperture is the unit of measurement which defines the size of the opening in the lens that lets light through.
ISO
is how sensitive the camera is to light. Use a
high ISO
in low light, and a
low ISO
in bright light. Slide7
To Achieve Over Exposure
If
over exposure
is an exposure where too much light is let into the photo, then how can we allow this light in on purpose to achieve a dramatic affect? This can be achieved by a longer shutter speed and larger aperture.
By using these settings, more light is allowed into the frame of the photograph. Slide8
High-Key Photos
High-key lighting
aims to reduce the light
ratio, or contrast,
in a photo.
To achieve a high-key photo, you must use over exposure and some type of light in the background of your photo.Slide9
To Achieve Under Exposure
Under exposure
can be achieved oppositely of how overexposure is achieved.
If under exposure is where not enough light is allowed into the frame, then using a short shutter speed and small aperture will prevent this light from coming in.Slide10
Low-Key Photos
A
low-key photo
is a photo where everything (or almost everything) in the photo is black besides the subject. An “easy” way to achieve a low key photo is to take a photo with a very
short exposure
, and use flash or shine light only onto your subject. Slide11
In Conclusion…
Learning how to use your camera settings to achieve perfect exposure can be tricky, but learning this is the first step to using these settings to purposely achieve under and over exposure.
Once you learn how to use
ISO, shutter speed and aperture, you’ll be on your way creating your own photos with beautiful dramatic effects!
