By: Boston. What Causes Body odor. Eccrine or Apocrine glands produce sweat. While we wear sock or shoes, it is more difficult for the sweat to evaporate, giving bacteria more sweat to break down into smelly substances. Sweat is odorless by nature but bacteria that covers the surface of the skin breaks down sweat and feed on it. The result is if the smelly substances becomes a body odor when it evaporates. Food can also make body odor.. 2 Types of Exocrine Sweat Glands There are three types of sweat gland in the human: the eccrine, apocrine and apoeccrine, but it is the eccrine sweat glands that are involved in thermoregulation.
