4 In October 1914 Thousands of British Indian soldiers were rushed from India via Egypt across the black seas in their summer uniforms to help stop the fast German advance in to Belgium and France Many believed that they had only arrived just in time for the fighting as the war would be over by Christmas They were greeted with cheers friendliness and great curiosity by grateful French people through the streets and at their camp on Marseilles race course Women presented the troops with cigarettes and fruit and girls strewed flowers on the road and pinned them to tunics and turbans wrote The Times.
