In 1497, Giovanni
Cabotto
was sent by England to explore the eastern shore

He reached Labrador and Newfoundland and found the area rich in fish

a westward flowing river

led to China and named it

Returned with 3
ships
Accomplishments:

up the St. Lawrence to the
two
native villages of
Stadacona
and
Hochelaga
2) Indians
instructed the Europeans: how to survive
the Winter
and cure
scurvy
Relationships became strained and Cartier returned to France

Cartier’s 3rd mission 1541-1542
The mission of the third voyage was to create a colony
The expedition included some priests to convert Amerindians to Christianity (social)
He argues with the leader of the expedition and returned to Europe with pyrite and quarts thinking them gold and diamonds
