Slide4March 2009 Trip - Purpose
Spent eight days in Chasnigua with all of the students and Drs. Skokan and Munoz.Assessed the village needs.Mapped village with GPS.Extracted water samples for testing.Mapped the subsurface with electromagnetic instruments EM31, 34 and magnetometer to determine locations of interest for potential subsurface water.

Slide9Filters small particles
Schmutzdecke provides effective purification to potable water standardsTakes 10 to 20 days for Schmutzdecke to form and must be kept wet to maintain the biological layerFairly easy to clean
Sand Filter
Slide10Low maintenance filter for particles >100 Micron (.0039in)
Made from durable, weather resistant and inexpensive materialsHelps to make the sand filter last longer by filtering out the large particlesLimited pooling effect means less contamination from animals drinking from the dammed water
Particle Filter
Slide11Reinforced Polypropylene GeoMembrane
Less Material Needed
Labor Intensive
Lower Cost
Slide12July 2009 Trip - Purpose
Two graduate students and one undergraduate student travelled with Dr. MunozUse DC resistivity to seek the location of fault zones and geological anomalies.
