Goal and Objective

Goal- Students will learn strategies for commentary.

Students will apply commentary strategies to an effective central idea paragraph. Slide3

What is commentary

Commentary is your explanation, ideas and comments within your writing.

Good commentary is essential to good writingSlide4

Commentary Strategy 1

Sarcasm

- Instead of giving your thoughts, you can state a remark that means the opposite of what you want to say. It is intended to mock or make fun the other side of the argument.

Example- I am sure if schools allowed students to use their electronic devices in the classroom they would NEVER even think about using them to be distracted since ALL teenagers are so responsible. Seriously though, allowing students to use their phones in class is like inviting them to be permanently distracted. This would cause many students to fail and be academically unsuccessful. Slide5

Commentary Strategy 2

Rhetorical Question-

a question asked for effect that has an obvious answer therefore no answer is required.

Example- Do you really think students will focus on their classwork when they have access to Instagram and other fun things on their phones in place of their classwork? Clearly, allowing students to use their phones in class will be a huge mistake because students will be focused on everything other than their class work. Students already have

a

hard

enough time being focused without this

ridiculous

distraction. Slide6

Commentary Strategy 3

Insight/Analysis-

the ability to see clearly and honestly into the nature of a challenging situation or subject.

Example- Clearly teens are not responsible enough to handle using technology in school. Instead of focusing on academics they use this new found freedom to take “selfies” and text the latest gossip. Reversing the decision to allow electronic devices is the only way to ensure students will get back to their school work and stop “playing” on their phones. Slide7

Sample Paragraph 2

The central idea of this article is that France is making it illegal to use your freedom of speech to insult others.

The article states “insults based on religion is a crime punishable by a fine of (euro) 22,500 and six months in jail.” It also states, “Other countries have criminalized “hate speech,” including Germany, the Netherlands, the U.K., Sweden, and Canada are likewise sending the dangerous message that offending people with words or images is akin to assaulting them with fists.” And finally, “this has a chiding effect on freedom of

expression.” Slide9

Sample Paragraph 3

The central idea of this article is that France is making it illegal to use your freedom of speech to insult others.

The article states “insults based on religion is a crime punishable by a fine of (euro) 22,500 and six months in jail.”

Can you imagine how many people in our country would be in jail if we criminalized insulting others? Everyone I know would have been arrested at least a handful of times. I think police officers have more important job to complete than issuing tickets for being mean.

It also states, “Other countries have criminalized “hate speech,” including Germany, the Netherlands, the U.K., Sweden, and Canada are likewise sending the dangerous message that offending people with words or images is akin to assaulting them with fists.”

Clearly, hitting people with hurtful words is the same as physically injuring someone and sending them to the hospital right? In reality, these two offenses are nowhere near one another in terms of severity- being mean is just not a criminal offense.

And finally the article states, “this has a chiding effect on freedom of expression.”

In America, we take our freedom of expression and freedom of speech very seriously. It would be completely unaccepting to take this right from someone just for voicing their personal opinion. Part of freedom of speech is entitling people to their own opinions even if others find them “offensive.”Slide10

You try… Fill in the commentary!

The central idea of this text is that using a writer’s artistic work is being used to incriminate them.

The article states, “The District Attorney’s Office says they illustrate Mitchell had the mind-set to commit such crimes.”

It also states, “ The possibility that their lyrics could be used against them during criminal proceedings continues to chill aspiring rappers across the United States.”

Finally, the text states, “It’s supposed to be freedom of speech.”
