Education for children in FC

AB 490 (law regulating education for children in FC) was a result of lower educational outcomes for FY such as, lower grade level performance, more likely to be held back, less likely to complete high school, less likely to go onto college

Key provisions -child has same academic, resource, services and extracurricular activities, least restrictive program and child’s best interest

Rights under this law…

Children have the right to remain in their school of origin if they change placement or after removal from the home

Regular school placement unless IEP needs states other program is in child’s best interest

Individualized Education Program (IEP)-can be developed to meet a child’s specific educational needs based on their disability

Request should be in writing to the school (they must respond in writing within 15 days to your request)
