Understand the effects poor moving and handling may have on our spine and discs.
Have a relevant understanding of Risk Assessments on both a formal and informal basis.
Have knowledge around the equipment we may come across within our workplace.

slide2. What is Moving and Handling? 2. Manual handling relates to the moving of items either by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling. The weight of the item is an important factor, but many other factors can create a risk of injury, for example the number of times you have to pick up or carry an item, the distance you are carrying it, where you are picking it up from or putting it down (picking it up from the floor, putting it on a shelf above shoulder level) and any twisting, bending, stretching or other awkward posture you may adopt while doing a task. 11.6 million working days are lost per year due to Muscular Skeletal Disorders this works out that each person on average takes 20.8 days off work.

Avoid handling that involve risk of injury.
Assess all manoeuvres which cannot be avoided
Take steps to reduce the risk of injury (where reasonably practical) Provision and use of work equipment Regulations 1998
Requires that equipment provided for use at work, including machinery is safe. It also covers the supply and maintenance of appropriate moving and handling equipment and the training of staff in how and why it is used. Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
Cover all lifting equipment used in the workplace, its condition and working order. 3. Formal Risk Assessments
Employers must reduce the risk of injury to staff and people using care services by: avoiding those manual handling tasks that could result in injury, where reasonably practicable. assessing the risks from moving and handling that cannot be avoided Informal Risk Assessments
All staff continually risk assess throughout any moving and handling technique and you probably do it without even realising your doing this.

slide4. Anatomy of the Spine We only have one back and we need to maintain and look after it for a lifetime. One back injury can affect you for the rest of your life and in your role as carers its part of the body you will use during almost every task you undertake whilst delivering care. The back has over 500 bones and muscles, numerous joints, nerves, ligaments, tendons and discs which form a gentle curved S shape. This S shape is the natural position of the spine and when the back is moved out of this position then additional pressure and stress is placed upon it. Our discs sit between each of our vertebrae and act as the shock absorbers for movement and any impact. These discs contain a nucleus pulpous which is a jelly like substance. Each of the discs are fused into the vertebrae which keeps them in place within the spine. A prolapsed discs occur when the nucleus tissue is forced out of the outer ring. When a disc herniates or ruptures, it may create pressure against one or more of the spinal nerves which can cause pain, weakness or numbness in the area of the body served by those nerves. Other names for slipped (herniated) discs are prolapsed and ruptured discs. 4. Moving and Handling v6.6

slide5. Correct Posture How can you implement these in your day to day activities?

Remember the spines neutral position (the S shape) whenever a straight back is referred to this is the position to assume. To achieve this position, keep shoulders back and raise the chin. This is the ideal position for any lifting or patient handling. 6. Keep arms in line with the trunk of the body
When a load is held close to the body it places less stress and pressure on the lumbar region of the back. 5. Assess the task/area/load
Prepare the area before you start a lift or manoeuvre, look for potential hazards, assess the equipment you may be using, are there any slip or trip hazards? For patient handling speak to the individual, are they coherent, what is their mental and physical state? 2. Gain a broad stable base
Position the feet as close to the load as possible to avoid an over stretch, feet should be positioned hip width apart in front of the load and in the direction of the movement. 3. Bend the knees
Allow the powerful leg muscles to do the work, where loads are lower than you bend down to do them; do not bend the back to reach. However bending past the 90 degree angle makes the legs less efficient at baring a load. 5. Paws no Claws
A palm positioning will ensure that you are supporting as much of the load as possible and prevents fingertips becoming trapped under a load and also prevents fingertip bruising if supporting a service user. The greater the area of the hand you have on the load the better the support you will have. Moving and Handling v6.6

slide6. Care for Plus Sized People 6. With a person of average weight in a standing position the centre of gravity will lay inline with the pelvis. This makes movement of the pelvis paramount for standing walking and sitting. Therefore when a client with reduced mobility requires assistance out of the chair, the care worker will do this by placing one hand on the pelvis or hip area to initiate movement whilst maintaining good contact across the clients back with their arm for support and balance. However in a client who is overweight and depending on how their weight is distributed, the centre of gravity may well be lower and further forward in their body. If their stomach area lies between their thighs, their concentrated body mass will be lower also therefore needing a wider stable base (feet further apart) Principle’s of Person Centred Care must apply Supporting sitting to standing (one or two carers) ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Other moving and handling aids

Is a slide sheet which is fitted in the bed like a normal sheet, with the smooth surface in the middle of the bed. The smooth silky central part enables turning with minimal effort. Sliding sideways is made easy without risk of sliding off the bed by the anti slip material at both sides of the sheet. The Material also prevents the user from sliding down the bed. Etac System:
This system consists of 2 parts, a glide mattress and a nylon sheet with locking mechanism that is fixed to the mattress. The combination of the two provides low friction surface movement in all directions. Moving and Handling v6.6

In care services, manual handling can be an everyday occurrence, and hoists are one of the most common manual handling aids used in order to help both staff and the individuals we support move more easily and without risk. It is important that safe working procedures are followed during hoisting to avoid accidents that can result in serious or fatal injuries. What do you need to consider before hoisting someone?

There are many different types of slings which you may come across within your workplace such as toileting slings, transfer slings and hammock slings they all are used for a different transfer with the hoist. Staff should familiarise themselves with these slings before use on the individuals we support. 7. Divided Leg Sling ______________________________________________ Hammock Slings ______________________________________________ Toileting/ Access Sling
______________________________________________ Step by step guide to using a stand aid;
Ensure the individual has positioned there bottom to the edge of the seat
Clients knees should fit up to the knee pads with their feet flat to the floor.
Ensure the sling is fitted to the individual we support and the stand aid appropriate to what is stated in the care plan.
Ensure individual is holding on to the hoist before moving.
Communicate with the client that they are about to be lifted.
Stand Aid will then raise to a standing position.
Move to designated area.
Lower individual down onto chair/ bed/ commode etc. Wheelchairs:
When assisting someone in a wheelchair ensure that you have followed care plans in regards to if lap straps are used or not as this is restraint without correct documentation it can be seen as abuse.
Remember your position with communication- get down to the eye level of the person using the wheelchair.
Never tip the wheelchair forwards or backwards when assisting up ramps/kerbs as the client may fall out.
When assisting out of the wheelchair do not let the client stand on the footplates as they may break and cause injury. Moving and Handling v6.6

slide8. Falls Equipment and Fire Evacuation Equipment 8. Mangar Elk Lifting Cushion:
If someone falls they can shuffle onto the cushion or be rolled from the recovery position and assisted into an upright position then the Elk can inflate at the touch of a button with someone supporting the individual from behind to bring them to a raise seated position ready to stand. The Elk can lift up to 70 stone (450kg). The Raizer emergency lifting chair:
The Raizer emergency lifting chair is a fast and safe solution to help fallen people get back on their feet with ease and it only needs one person to work it. The Raizer chair can lift 150kg (23.6 stone) Falls equipment can be used in the event that someone is uninjured unable to get themselves up off of the floor, we would always try and encourage someone to get themselves off the floor unaided before using any equipment. This can be done by asking them to push up using a chair. Evacuation Chair:
These are used to facilitate the safe, rapid evacuation of people with mobility problems. The products generally vary in size, style and function but they typically form a lightweight compact sturdy wheeled chair with straps. Evacuation Sheet:
This fixes permanently to the bottom of a flexible foam mattress by means of strong elastics it has safety belts to hold the patient on the mattress and pulling straps at either end. Evacuation Sledge:
The evacuation sledge is safe to ride over any surfaces, carpets, concrete or any bumps like stairs and an upper layer for patient comfort. There are safety belts and foot pockets to hold the patient in place, pulling loops are at each end and a touch slippery coated bottom side. Moving and Handling v6.6
