Curve Learning and Development Legislation Overview 3. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA)
Duty of care on employers to protect the health, safety, and welfare of staff.
Employees must also take reasonable care of their own and others’ safety.
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR)
Employers must avoid hazardous manual handling where possible.
Risk assessments are required for all handling tasks.
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
Ensures lifting equipment is safe, maintained, and used correctly.
Regular inspections and records are required.
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
Covers the suitability and safety of equipment used in the workplace.
Staff must be trained and competent to use equipment. SCENARIO
Fred uses the hoist and wants to get out of bed; however, the hoist is not working today. What do you do?:
1 – Ask a staff member to help you lift Fred into his wheelchair.
2 – Keep Fred in bed until the hoist is fixed. Answer: 2-Keep Fred in bed until the hoist is fixed. Lifting people is not a safe method of Moving & Handling and increases the risk of injury to all involved. Once reported, the employers should arrange for hoist repair quickly.<br>

A risk assessment is the legal process of identifying, reviewing and managing risks to ensure that both staff and service users are protected from harm as best as possible. Formal Risk Assessment What is it & Where to Find It:
A formal assessment that identifies risks when moving or assisting individuals in care.
Covers the person’s needs, the task, environment, and equipment.
Completed by a senior carer, nurse, or therapist.
Found in the care plan, manual handling folder, or electronic care system.
How It Benefits Staff:

What is the task that needs to be done? Is it lifting, transferring, or repositioning? Understand the complexity and duration of the task.
I – Individual
Consider the physical ability of the person/people conducting the task. Are they trained and competent? Are they comfortable doing the task?
L – Load
What is the size, weight, and shape of the object or person being moved? Can it be divided into smaller loads?
E – Environment
Assess the area where the task will take place. Is it cluttered, well-lit, or does it have obstacles? Are the surfaces safe for moving the individual?
O - Other factors
Are there any other factors that could affect the task? This includes the condition of the person being moved (e.g., illness, level of consciousness), use of equipment, and the number of carers needed.<br>

Curve Learning and Development Anatomy of the Spine & Posture 5. The spine, or vertebral column, is a vital part of the human skeleton that provides structural support, enables movement, and protects the spinal cord. It is made up of 33 vertebrae in total, divided into five regions: 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral (fused into one sacrum), and 4 coccygeal (typically fused into the coccyx). Between most of the vertebrae are 23 intervertebral discs, which act as cushions to absorb shock and allow flexibility. The spine also serves as an anchor for muscles and ligaments, playing a crucial role in posture and balance. ASSESS the situation

Curve Learning and Development Care for Plus Sized People 6. With a person of average weight in a standing position, the centre of gravity will lie in line with the pelvis. This moves the pelvis paramount for standing, walking and sitting. Therefore, when a client with reduced mobility requires assistance out of the chair, the care worker will do this by placing one hand on the pelvis or hip area to initiate movement whilst maintaining good contact across the client’s back with their arm for support and balance. However, in a client who is overweight and depending on how their weight is distributed, the centre of gravity may well be lower and further forward in their body. If their stomach area lies between their thighs, their concentrated body mass will be lower, also therefore needing a wider stable base (feet further apart) Principle’s of Person Centred Care must apply Supporting sitting to standing (one or two carers) ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Other moving and handling aids

It is a slide sheet which is fitted in the bed like a normal sheet, with the smooth surface in the middle of the bed. The smooth, silky central part enables turning with minimal effort. Sliding sideways is made easy without risk of sliding off the bed by the anti-slip material on both sides of the sheet. The Material also prevents the user from sliding down the bed. Etac System:
This system consists of 2 parts: a glide mattress and a nylon sheet with a locking mechanism that is fixed to the mattress. The combination of the two provides low-friction surface movement in all directions.<br>

Curve Learning and Development Supporting Someone Who is Falling 9. During the Fall – Stay Calm & Assess
🛑 Do NOT try to catch them mid-fall.
This could injure both of you.
✅ Do:
Let them fall safely if already going down.
Guide their fall only if you’re in a safe position.
Note what caused the fall (wet floor, uneven carpet, etc.). After the Fall – When to Act
🕒 Act immediately if:
They are in pain or unconscious
There’s visible injury or bleeding
They can’t get up by themselves
Call emergency services if needed (999)
Do not move them unless trained or they are in immediate danger When NOT to Act Alone
Do NOT lift the person alone — this can cause further harm.
Wait for trained assistance or use appropriate lifting equipment
Follow your organisation's emergency and moving/handling protocols Company Policy – UK Health & Social Care
📋 Policy Requirements:
Complete an incident report (within 24 hours)
Inform your line manager or supervisor

If someone falls, they can shuffle onto the cushion or be rolled from the recovery position and assisted into an upright position, then the Elk can inflate at the touch of a button with someone supporting the individual from behind to bring them to a raised seated position ready to stand. The Elk can lift to 70 stone (450kg). The Raizer emergency lifting chair:
The Raizer emergency lifting chair is a fast and safe solution to help fallen people get back on their feet with ease, and it only needs one person to work it. The Raizer chair can lift 150kg (23.6 stone) Falls equipment can be used if someone is uninjured unable to get themselves up off the floor, we would always try and encourage someone to get themselves off the floor unaided before using any equipment.
