COOKING ON A BUDGET ESSENTIAL SKILLS WHY COOK ON A BUDGET? ESSENTIAL SKILLS Cooking on a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing taste or nutrition. It’s about making the most of what you have and creating delicious, low-cost meals. With planning and creativity, you can turn simple ingredients into satisfying dishes. OBJECTIVES OF THIS WORKSHOP ESSENTIAL SKILLS By the end of this session, you will: Learn how to create tasty, low-cost meals. Practise meal planning using items from a typical food parcel. Explore recipes to maximise the use of basic cupboard items. Access advanced resources for more recipes and tips. EXAMPLE OF A BUDGET-FRIENDLY RECIPE Boil a large pot of water. Once boiling, add the pasta and cook according to the packet instructions until it’s firm but cooked. While the pasta cooks, heat a large pan over medium heat. Add the oil and fry the onion until it’s soft. Options: Meat: Add the chicken pieces to the pan and gently fry until they are browned and cooked through. Vegetarian: Add the prepared vegetables to the pan, gently frying until they are tender (about 5-7 minutes). Pour in the pasta sauce and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. If the sauce is too thick, add a bit of the reserved pasta water. Once the pasta is cooked and drained, add it to the sauce. Mix everything together so the pasta is well covered. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes and adjust the seasoning to your taste. METHOD ESSENTIAL SKILLS COOKING ON A BUDGET: WORKSHEET ESSENTIAL SKILLS Step 1: Exercise – meal planning Write down ideas for meals using these items. For example, Meal 1: Tinned tomatoes, dried rice, tinned vegetables = Vegetable Rice. Meal 2: Instant noodles, tinned meat, and a splash of soy sauce = Quick Noodle Stir-fry.
