slide1. Derrida: Structure & sign MA IV SEM PAPER XIII
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH GOVT COLLEGE PAONTA SAHIB
slide2. DerridaBorn 1930 in Algiers (French colony in N. Africa)
Born into Jewish family
Experienced cultural marginalization
Expelled from first school because his presence exceeded the allowed amount of Jewish students.
Left second school because of anti-Semitic hostilities
slide3. Levi-StraussHe named structuralism
He applied structuralism to his anthropological work.
He sought in his works to create a grammar of myths based on his analysis of Nambikwara in S. America
He believed his research would reveal a structure for myths related to all cultures
slide4. What is deconstruction? Deconstruction involves the close reading of texts in order to demonstrate that any given text has irreconcilably contradictory meanings, rather than being a unified, logical whole. As J. Hillis Miller, the preeminent American deconstructionist, has explained in an essay entitled Stevens’ Rock and Criticism as Cure (1976), “Deconstruction is not a dismantling of the structure of a text, but a demonstration that it has already dismantled itself. Its apparently solid ground is no rock but thin air.”
slide5. Deconstruction is a poststructuralist theory, based largely but not exclusively on the writings of Derrida. It is in the first instance a philosophical theory and a theory directed towards the (re)reading of philosophical writings
slide6. Deconstruction was both created and has been profoundly influenced by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. Derrida, who coined the term deconstruction, argues that in Western culture, people tend to think and express their thoughts in terms of binary oppositions (white / black, masculine / feminine, cause /effect, conscious /unconscious, presence / absence, speech writing
