slide2. Learning outcomes By the end of this week, you will know and understand:
the different intrinsic factors that can lead to a sports injury
how different intrinsic factors can influence the risk and severity of injury
how some individual variables can influence other individual variables.
slide3. Starter activity Make a list of the different ways that each of the following individual variables may cause injuries in sport:
fitness
ability
experience.
Discuss your thoughts with a partner.
slide4. Intrinsic factors Intrinsic factors are those where the factor or risk of injury comes from inside the body.
They include:
slide5. Individual variables
slide6. Individual variables
slide7. Individual variables Weight
Performers need to be a suitable weight for the activity otherwise the chance of injury increases, for example an underweight rugby player may get injured in the attempt to break through attempted tackles. Some activities have weight categories.
slide8. Individual variables Fitness levels
Lack of fitness can be a major cause of injury, especially a lack of flexibility. For example, a person who is lacking in flexibility is more likely to tear muscles or ligaments.
slide9. Individual variables Technique/ability
You need ability to perform skills; how you perform the skill is your technique. Using incorrect/poor technique increases the chance of injury.
For example, when attempting a gymnastics vault, a poor technique could result in a bad landing and an injured ankle.
slide10. Individual variables Nutrition/hydration
Exercise requires energy from food. Lack of suitable nutrients and water causes fatigue, affects concentration and focus, and increases the chance of injury.
For example, playing rugby without drinking sufficient water can lead to a loss of focus when making a tackle, which could lead to an injury.
slide11. Individual variables Medical conditions
Pre-existing medical conditions make a performer more susceptible to injuries, for example playing football with a pre-existing muscle tear may cause the player to mis-time a tackle, leading to further injury.
slide12. Individual variables
slide13. Activity 1 Choose two sports. For each sport, suggest how each of the following intrinsic factors may potentially cause an injury:
gender
age
experience
weight
fitness levels.
slide14. Activity 2 Choose two sports. For each sport, suggest how each of the following intrinsic factors may potentially cause an injury:
technique/ability
nutrition/hydration
medical conditions
sleep
previous/recurring injuries.
slide15. Summary Injuries can be caused by intrinsic factors.
Intrinsic factors are those that come from within the body.
Different intrinsic factors such as individual variables (gender, age, experience, weight, fitness levels, technique, nutrition, medical conditions, sleep and previous/recurring injuries) can influence the risk and severity of injury.
Some individual variables can influence other individual variables.
slide16. Plenary activity Work with a partner who has an interest in the same sport as yourself.
Take turns. One of you identifies an individual variable that could cause injury, and the other gives an example of that variable causing an injury.
