The WARSO Day marked is in accordance with the resolution reached at West Africa Road Safety Organization (WARSO) Executive Committee meeting held in Cotonou Republic of Benin in April 2013 where 8th of May was adopted as “WARSO Day” annually. It was resolved that certain periods of every year will be set aside for road safety activities to sensitise the populace within the sub-region, hence this auspicious gathering today. The theme for this year’s edition is tagged; ‘’Towards a Zero Bleeding on our Roads’’ and we hereby implore you to join in this advocacy by ensuring total devotion to all road safety rules and regulations. Drivers should demonstrate high sense of responsibility while driving, knowing that their lives and that of the commuters are of essence. Many have been killed, maimed and rendered handicapped due to crashes and most dreams have been dashed as bread winners, productive youths and so many brilliant individuals have been cut short in their journeys. It is extremely important to state here that the West African Sub-region and Nigeria inclusive is worst hit in the growing statistics of road crash fatalities. Most countries in West Africa and particularly, Sub-Sahara Africa falls within the “World Health Organization (WHO), Region Categorization” with troubling road traffic death rating that requires urgent action.
