Focus Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:1-6; 3:14-16
Key Verse: I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. 2 Timothy 1:5
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I am grateful to God—whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.
4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy.
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you.
6 For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands,…

People closest to us can influence us either positively or negatively. How can we discern the positive influences from the negative influences in our lives? Paul reminded Timothy of the genuine faith of his mother and grandmother. He recommended them as models for Timothy’s own faith. So, we consider the concept of mentoring and models in the church communities.
07
A wonderful serenity has taken possession From Philippians 2:19-22, we see that Paul thought very highly of Timothy, based on how well Timothy had worked with Paul as an apprentice minister. Apparently, unlike others who had deserted Paul, Timothy showed that he cared about people, a great pastoral quality.
08
A wonderful serenity has taken possession In the text, we see the legendary teacher and apostle mentoring Timothy to become a great minister of the Gospel. And this is how ministry skills are normally passed down through generations. One case of this we may be familiar with is that of world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham. Although many ministers influenced Mr. Graham’s life, his great mentor in evangelism was Dr. Mordecai Ham.
09
The practice of passing on ministry and leadership skills by mentoring is a feature of scripture. Paul and Timothy are in no way unique. Moses trained Joshua, who was ready to take over when Moses’ career came to an end. Similarly, Elijah mentored Elisha, Eli mentored Samuel, and Samuel in turn established a school of prophets. And King David instructed his son Solomon in leadership.
10
What we say in the text is what discipleship is all about. What Apostle Paul did with Timothy was but a continuation of what Christ did with the disciples/apostles – on-the-job training.
11
1. In what ways can we guard our faith?
12
2. Is faith transferable; meaning, can a parent transfer their faith to their children?
13
3. In what ways can we mentor other persons in our faith community?
Closing Song: “Now Thank We All Our God” (AMECH #573)
Closing Prayer: Dear Father, I thank you for all the people you put in my path to train and mature me to be more effective in the things you called me to. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
