The Island Storm
Does the idea of a storm fit with your perception of an island?<br>

Exploring the poem On your poem sheet are questions to help you to explore the content of the poem. The poem includes many examples of imagery to really bring the storm and the island to life for the reader.
Separate a page in your book in half and label the halves ‘what you can see’ and ‘what you can hear’.

Analysing the language We can use the What? Sir! Why? method when trying to understand the effect of the language on the meaning of the poem.
Look at the quotation below:
‘We just sit tight while wind dives / And strafes invisibly’
“What is the effect of the language within this line?” LO: To develop our poetry analysis skills<br>

Using ‘What? SIR? Why?’ WHAT? The wind is compared to a fighter plane through the use of metaphor when Heaney states ‘We just sit tight while wind dives / And strafes invisibly’.
SIR? This suggests that the wind has the power of a highly advanced piece of machinery.
WHY? This line is effective because a fighter plane has the power to destroy and cause damage when necessary. Through comparing the wind to a fighter plane shows us that the wind can also cause destruction on a large scale and, like a fighter plane, may not always be recognised straight away and the destruction takes place very quickly often leaving people defenceless.
