Evaluating Arguments The primary task of critical thinking is to identify arguments and to evaluate them.
There are two basic ways of evaluating arguments.
One technique is to evaluate the logical form of an argument by abstracting on its content, and analyzing the structure of the argument in order to determine if it is valid.
Another technique is to evaluate the argument in virtue of its form, content, and context in order to determine if it contains an informal fallacy.
Argument Structure Arguments have both a form and a content. In addition, to these two components of an argument there is always a dialectical context in which the argument occurs. The form of an argument is the abstract pattern of reasoning involved in the argument. It is a pattern of reasoning that can take on different contents.
The content of an argument is the explicit claims that are made in the premises and the conclusion.
