(Zoom in on your iPad to see the pictures better.) (a) (d) (b) (c)
04
Starter: How well do you know Christianity? From the pictures on the previous slide, all depict Christians around the world today. Did you guess right?
We often have preconceptions of world religions, however I wonder what do we really know about this world religion?
Due to the religious population of the UK, often Christianity can be the religion that people hear about in for example, primary school or see represented in the media etc.
However, this is changing and we live in a far more multicultural society with many different religious and non-religious groups.
05
Starter: How well do you know Christianity ? Write down…
As many things as you can that you associate with the religion, Christianity. (You can mind map, bullet point etc)
What has informed this knowledge e.g. school, home, personal experience, media or any other ?
Throughout the lesson think back to and reflect on what you have written here, how much did you know already and if there is there anything incorrect that you have written.
‘Christians believe this…’ One thing I make sure of before world religion units, is that we make sure we do not generalise all followers of a religion.
Yes, most Christians believe in one God, but with all religions beliefs can vary somewhat across groups, denominations and countries etc.
It is better to say ‘Some Christians believe…’ or ‘Catholics/ Baptists/ Orthodox Christians believe…’
Context: Introduction to Christianity In a nutshell…
Christianity is the name of the religion, and its followers are known as Christians.
Christianity is focused on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who Christians typically believe to be the Son of God. Jesus was born in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago.
It is the largest religion in the world today, and also the largest religious population in the UK at present.
