slide2. What is Sam? Dr. Michael Allen’s Successive Approximation Model (SAM) is derived from the agile software development process, which focuses on the development of working product through iterative and incremental development among collaborate teams of specialists (Allen & Sites, 2012; Brown & Green, 2020)

slide4. Addie vs. Sam ADDIE stands for Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate
ADDIE is linear “waterfall approach” and steps are ordered in the development process
ADDIE has been considered the “gold standard” for years in many organizations
ADDIE has longer development cycles compared to SAM
Communication with stakeholders occurs deeply into the development phase which doesn’t give the instructional designer enough time to make changes

slide5. SAM1 The basic process—SAM1—can be a good fit for smaller projects or teams. This flavor of SAM is a simple model with three iterations of the familiar instructional design steps of evaluation, design, and development. slide6. SAM 2 Larger projects, especially those involving more than a few people and needing formal budgets and project plans or those in which development is completed by a separate team, perhaps even in a different facility or country, will need to use SAM2
The major difference is that in SAM2, the project moves on to a development phase when design iterations have been completed, whereas in SAM1 the product is complete at the conclusion of the Evaluate, Design, and Develop iterations.

slide7. TIPS for A Successful SAM1 and sam2 implementation The SAM model give the instructional designer the ability to revise work and test protypes as he/she moves forward in the development process which saves time
Use the “Savvy Start” method (Allen & Sites, 2022) which helps the instructional designer to engage major stakeholders (budget maker, person who owns the performance problem, person who supervises performers, subject matter experts, recent learners) from the beginning of the project
Collect data and gain insight with major stakeholders and make sure everyone is aligned as soon as possible
Brainstorm and collaborate with major stakeholders to smooth out any challenges that may be on the table upfront
Test out prototypes as often as possible through the design process to ensure that final product is consistent with the major stakeholders’ vision

slide8. Challenges Although the SAM agile instructional design method is growing in popularity, there are a few challenges with the model that the instructional designer should consider.
SAM is a cyclical process and rapid phototyping is often the most essential step (elearningindustry, 2022)
Less emphasis on the prep phase (elearningindustry, 2022)
Can have lack cohesion due to the inclusion of so many different voices (Kennesaw.edu, 2022)<br>
