This is a three-week unit.
The unit is set in the context of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.
Additional texts supplied are: a playscript, a poem and an eyewitness account.
The structure of the unit is outlined below. The Iron Man is a modern fairy tale about a giant robot who lands on Earth and reeks havoc in the countryside by eating industrial farming equipment. In an effort to stop the destruction, farmers set a trap and bury the metal giant in a pit. The following spring, the Iron Man digs himself free and is befriended by Hogarth, a small boy who takes pity on him. The Iron Man promises to cause no further trouble for the locals and is accepted as part of the community. All is calm until one day when a terrifying dragon from outer space lands on Earth and it is up to the Iron Man to find a way to save mankind from annihilation.
