Brief: We are going on a detective hunt around Edinburgh… in our classroom!
Edinburgh Castle THEN The castle is built on an extinct volcano called Castle Rock in the middle of Edinburgh. People have lived on Castle Rock since the Bronze Age, around 850 BC, and there has been a royal castle on the site since at least the 12th century. NOW It is the most important castle in Scotland now it is a national monument, museum and tourist attraction.
National Monument THEN Building started in 1822 to remember soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars. NOW Arthur's Seat is located in Holyrood Park and is a popular destination for tourists.
Scott Monument THEN Built to remember Sir Walter Scott. This is LARGEST MONUMENT TO A WRITER IN THE WORLD! NOW Tourists can climb the 287 steps to the top for amazing views!
The Palace of Holyroodhouse The Palace of Holyroodhouse is HM The Queen's official residence in Scotland. It contains historic apartments where Mary, Queen of Scots lived.
Royal Botanic Gardens The gardens contain Britain's tallest Palm House in The Glasshouse Experience.
Princes Street Gardens THEN The Princes Street Gardens was one of the most unpleasant places in Scotland. The gardens are at the location of an old man-made lake called the Nor' Loch . It was then used as a city waste ground. The combination of the smell from the lake and the smoke from the houses led to the city gaining its nickname of "Auld Reekie". The Nor' Loch was drained in the mid 18th century. NOW Today most of the land is owned by the local council.
Scottish Parliament Made from a mixture of steel, oak, and granite. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape, the flower paintings by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the upturned boats on the seashore, Enric Miralles, one of the world's premier architects, developed a design that he said was a building "growing out of the land". This is the old Scottish parliament building in Edinburgh, where Scottish Members of Parliament (MPs) sat until 1707.
Greyfriar’s Church The story of 'Greyfriar's Bobby', the faithful Skye terrier who sat by his master’s grave in the 1800s, is remembered by a statue of Bobby on George IV Bridge.
The Old City Observatory THEN Inspired by a Greek temple of the Four Winds, the building was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1818. NOW Located on Calton Hill and has exhibitions and viewings of the night sky.
EXTRA: Physical feature: Arthur’s Seat THEN The reason for it being named after ‘Arthur’ is unknown. NOW Arthur's Seat is located in Holyrood Park and is a popular destination for tourists. This landmark is also known as the Lion's Head - the hill looks a little like a crouching lion.
