Planning a Party FOCUS: Using Multiplication in real life contexts.

I can Represent and solve problems involving multiplication using efficient mental and written strategies and appropriate digital technologiesRecall multiplication facts up to 10x10 Use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers to calculations.Solve problems involving multiplication of large numbers by one or two digit numbers. Create simple financial plans.

Learning Focus You are planning a birthday party for your next birthday. Throughout this task your will be focusing on: EstimatingUsing multiplication to calculate the total cost of each item.Applying multiplication in real life contexts.Using addition to determine the total cost. Using subtractions to determine the difference.

Guests Your parents have agreed that you may invite your entire homegroup to your party. They have also agreed that if you are really good and clean your bedroom you can invite the entire learning neighbourhood. I will be planning a party for_______students.

Estimating- Creating a Budget Your parents have agreed to pay the total cost of your party. However, you must complete a budget for them before they will agree to the party. You will need to make a list of all of the food, decorations, entertainment and utensils that you will need for the party. Use the shopping page to guide you.

Recording your budget   Item Quantity Estimated cost per item 1 Plastic Plates (20 Pack) 2 2x$5= $10 2 Lemonade (box of 10) 2 3   Sausage Rolls (12 pack)   2   4   Ice Cream Cake   2   5   Party Pies (30 pack)   1   6   Plastic Bowls (20 Pack)     7   Lolly Bags (8 Pack)     8   Tomato Sauce   1   9   Plastic Cups (20 Pack)   2   10       Total Cost       $11.00

Shopping! You will need to look at the prices and of the items to determine the total cost of your party. You will also need to look closely at the quantity of items within the pack. E.g 24 party pies in one pack or 12 party hats in one pack. You must show you calculations in your maths books. This is where you will demonstrate your understanding of multiplication. You must record all of your information in a table.

Recording your spending   Item (please include the quantity in each pack) e.g Paper Plates -12 pack Cost per item Quantity Total Cost 1   Paper Plate – 12 pack   $3 4   $12 2   cake   $12.95 1   $12.95 3       4       5       6       7       8       9       10       Total Cost

Total Cost – Adding - Subtracting You will then need to add up the total cost of your party. My budget was_________________ the total cost of my party was_____________.The difference between my budget and the total cost of my party was___________________.

Check your work This is the time where you will review your work with a red pencil. Please do not rub out your calculations. Remember: Being able to identify your errors is a skillDon’t forget to make sure that the $ and . are included where appropriate.
