EXAMPLE ONE: MODERN APPRENTICESHIPS

~£75m programme supplying Scottish labour market with intermediate skills

Scottish

Government’s

commitment

is to sustain 25,000 modern apprenticeships.

The programme gives apprenticeships the opportunity to combine employment and training by following an industry designed training framework that results in a level 2 or 3 accredited work based qualification.

Policy directions set by Scottish Government, administered by Skills Development Scotland, an NDPBSlide6

WHY WE CARE:GENDER INEQUALITY

The disproportionate spend on men, and the unequal distribution of participation across different MA frameworks, will have a

lifetime impact on women’s earnings, and perpetuate the gender pay gap

. In addition to the impact on individual women and their families, this will also have an impact on the

demand for services for older women experiencing poverty in later life

.Slide10

SO WHAT OTHER CHOICES COULD BE MADE?

Spending linked to equality outcomes within the programme

Targets for women’s participation in male-dominated frameworks

Spending allocated to equality initiatives like Equate Scotland and Close the Gap

Education spending targeted at desegregating subjects within schools and at early years

Employability spending linked to gender equality outcomes Slide11
