Unit 1: Masks of Humanity

“We wear the mask that grins and lies

it hides our cheeks and shades our eyes”

-Paul Lawrence Dunbar “We Wear the Mask”

The texts in this unit portray the representation

of the

flaws of humanity

and provide numerous examples of human beings deceiving themselves while hiding behind idealized notions of goodness, equality, and perfection.

Human beings

hide our imperfections behind masks

so that when we, as a human race, look in the mirror, we are able to

deceive

ourselves into believing

a false reality. Slide4
