3. OBJECTIVESBY THE END OF THIS LECTURE STUDENTS SHOULD UNDERSTAND :1-THE CONCEPT OF DISEASE.2- DEFINITIONS OF DIEASE.

4. WHO has defined health but not disease. This is because disease has many shades (spectrum of disease),ranging from inapparent(subclinical) cases to sever illness.So, there are many attempts to define disease. These are as follows:-

5. 1) Webster concept:“A condition in which body health is impaired, a departure from a state of health, an alteration of the human body interrupting the performance of the vital functions.”

6. 2) Oxford English Dictionary: “A condition of the body or some part or organ of body in which its functions are disrupted or deranged”.

7. 3) Ecological concept: “a maladjustment of human organism to the environment”

8. The simplest definition “Disease is just opposite to Health”

11. Disease: physiological/psychological dysfunctionIllness: is a subjective state of the person who feels aware of not being well.Sickness: Is state of social dysfunction.

12. Clinical disease : No symptoms Symptoms. disability

13. Subclinical disease : No symptoms Symptoms. disability

14. In short ,an adequate definition of disease is yet to be found, a definition that is satisfactory or acceptable to the epidemiologist, clinician , sociologist and the statistician.
