3. The Healthy Plate

4. The Healthy PlateFatProteinVitamins & MineralsCarbohydratesThe healthy plate shows us how much of each nutrient type we should be eating to ensure we have a balanced diet.A diet that concentrates on only a few nutrient groups is not balanced and may lead to deficiency diseases. However, the diet people need also depends on their lifestyle.

5. Look at the food labels

6. Healthy for who?For example, an accountant sitting at a desk all day might only need 1800 calories of energy per day, compared with 2500 calories for a builder. Eating too much can cause weight gain if people are not very active. It’s not just energy needs that vary. Some people have particular nutrient needs, for example, a pregnant woman needs a diet with plenty of protein, vitamins and minerals. Also some people have allergies or health conditions that require different foods, e.g. a diabetic requires low sugar intake.

7. TaskDesign a meal plan for one day (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks) for one of the following people:Body builder (high protein)Pregnant women (high iron, calcium and protein)Diabetic (low sugar)Extra challenge: Explain why this diet/ the foods you have chosen are good for the person’s lifestyle.

8. Mini plenary

9. Deficiency diseasesA lack of a particular nutrient in your diet can lead to deficiency diseases e.g. anaemia, which is due to a lack of iron.
