Lesson 3 2 Peter

2 Peter 1:1-4 Promises: I will NOT be: useless, unfruitful, blind or short sighted, forgetting my purification from sins I WILL : be supplied abundant entrance into the kingdom of Christ and NEVER stumble I WILL : be useful, fruitful and remember I WILL : be a partaker of the divine nature, escaping the corruption in the world by lust

2 Peter 1:1-4 Conditions: IF: These qualities are mine IF: These qualities are increasing IF: I am diligently supplying them to my faith IF: I truly am a partaker of the divine nature

Believer’s Responsibility Are these qualities supplied simultaneously, consecutively, or progressively? “Each preceding grace leads to the following: each following tempers and perfects the preceding. They are set down in the order of nature, rather than the order of time: for though every grace bears a relation to every other, yet here they are so nicely ranged, that those which have the closest dependence on each other are placed together.” Benson

“Supply” Epichoregeo : To furnish upon, to give. In addition, to supply further, to add more to How? Making every effort, applying all diligence Aorist tense: an action as completed without regard to its duration Active voice: the subject produces the action Imperative: Command Christians are COMMANDED to do this

Moral Excellence Arete : Moral goodness, virtue, uprightness. Superiority or being pleasing to God or the superiority of God revealed in the work of salvation. It denotes in a moral sense, what gives man his worth, his efficiency. Dictionary: the quality of doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong: admirableness

References I Pet. 2:9 Christians are to proclaim God’s excellencies Phil. 4:8 Concentrate on excellent things 2 Pet. 1:3 It is a GIFT God has granted to us What does moral excellence look like???? What do I DO that shows I am morally excellent? What should I NOT do?

Contrast with the False Prophets 2 Pet. 2:1 Secretly introduce heresies 2 Pet. 2:1 Deny the Master who bought them 2 Pet. 2:2 Their sensuality leads others astray 2 Pet. 2:2 Truth is maligned 2 Pet. 2:3 Greedy (the desire for more things, lusting for a greater number of temporal things that go beyond what God determines is eternally best) 2 Pet. 2:3 Exploit others with false words 2 Pet. 2:6-7 Ungodly, undisciplined

Contrast with false prophets 2 Pet. 2:8 Have lawless deeds 2 Pet. 2:10 Indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires, despise authority, daring, self-willed, revile angelic majesties and do not tremble 2 Pet. 2:12 Revile where they have no knowledge 2 Pet. 2:14 Adulterous, trained in greed, sin 2 Pet. 2:19 Slaves of corruption

knowledge Gnosis: primarily a seeking to know, an enquiry, investigation, especially of spiritual truth Prov. 1:7, 22 Fools hate knowledge Prov. 1:2 Know wisdom and instruction to discern the sayings of understanding Prov. 1:5 Wise man will hear AND increase in learning and acquire wise counsel Prov. 1:7 Fear of the Lord is the beginning

knowledge “True faith is not something that is made stronger by ignorance or by believing against the evidence. Rather, saving faith is consistent with knowledge and true understanding of facts. When people have true information about Christ they are better able to put their trust in Him. The more we know about Him and God’s character revealed in Him, the more fully we are able to put our trust in Him. Thus faith is NOT weakened by knowledge but should increase with more true knowledge.” Grudem Knowledge enables believers to grow

Self-control Egkrateia : the virtue of one who masters his desires and passions, especially his sensual appetites. Dominion within True mastery from within is explicitly called a fruit of the Spirit. Contentedness Without knowledge of WHAT moral excellence IS, what would I even need self-control for?

Cross references Gal. 5:22-23 Part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is self-control Self-control is necessary to live in a morally excellent way 2 Pet. 2:10 False teachers lacked self-control. They are self-WILLED . 2 Pet. 2:3, 14 Greedy; heart trained in greed 2 Pet. 2:14 Never cease from sin

perseverance Hupomone : steadfastness, constancy, endurance. “an abiding under”. The characteristic of a man who is unswerved from his deliberate purpose and his loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings. I Tim. 6:11 Pursue perseverance/steadfastness Luke 8:15 Hold fast, bear fruit with perseverance

perseverance Luke 21:19 You will gain your life Luke 21:13; Rev. 2:3 Suffering will lead to an opportunity for your testimony Rom. 5:3-4 Proven character ( a brand of what is tested and true), hope Heb. 6:12 Inherit God’s promises James 1:4 Complete, lacking in nothing I Tim. 6:11 Commanded to pursue it

Godliness Eusebeia : piety towards God, devotion, well-directed reverence, does NOT imply an inward inherent holiness. It is externalized piety. Demonstration of good and worshipful attitude toward God when spoken of a Christian. Both an attitude and manner of life. It does not come automatically, but is something into which we must put effort . The holiness of life is an indicator of sound doctrine and teaching

Godliness: man’s attitude toward god I Tim. 3:16 It’s a mystery – gospel of Christ I Tim. 4:7 Discipline is needed for godliness I Tim. 4:8 Profitable for this life and the one to come I Tim. 6:3 Based on sound doctrine I Tim. 6:11 Christians are to pursue it Tit. 1:1 Knowledge of the truth is according to godliness

Contrast the false prophets Tit. 1:10,16 Rebellious men among believers who professed to know God, but denied Him by their deeds. Tit. 1:15 Mind and conscience are defiled Tit. 1:10 Taught for sordid gain, upsetting whole families 2 Tim. 3:5 Hold to a form of godliness, but deny its power. Avoid such men as these 2 Pet. 2 Destructive, corrupt, despise authority

Brotherly kindness and love Philadelphia: love of brothers. The love which Christians cherish for each other as “brethren” Man’s attitude towards man, whereas godliness is man’s attitude toward God Love: Agape – affectionate regard, goodwill, love which centers in moral preference, typically refers to divine love (=what God prefers)

Cross references I John 4:7-11 God is love and love comes from Him Everyone who loves is born of God Having God’s love is evidence of true salvation I Cor. 13:1-8 Love is patient, kind, not jealous, does not brag, is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly nor seek its own…but rejoices in the truth….love never fails
