At Least It Has a Happy

Ending

- Read

the following passage:

In

Romeo

+

 Juliet

, the newer movie, there is a scene early in the movie where the Montague Boys drive into a gas station.  The gas station is called Phoenix Gas.  It is here that first

we meet

Tybalt and the other Capulets.

You do not need anything else.  Based on the above passage, what will happen here?

a. Romeo and Juliet will fall in love.

b. Juliet will first turn down Romeo, but will later fall in love with him.

c. The gas station will explode.

d. Tybalt will die.Slide3

21 solutionIn

order to answer this question, you did not have to have read

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet

(in fact, it would not have helped you) and you do not need to have watched the movie.  All you need to pay attention to is the name of the gas station.  A Phoenix is a mythological bird that catches on fire every so often and emerges again from the ashes.  Fire and gas do not go well together.  This is foreshadowing (a hint of what will happen later in the story).

The correct answer is c.

Wat

did 'e

say?

- Read

the following quotes taken from the Harry Potter books.  All quotes are from

Hagrid

, the giant friend of Harry and his pals who lives outside the castle and is not allowed to use magic like the rest of the characters.

"I'm not

blamin

'

yeh

...but I

gotta

tell

yeh

, I thought you

two'd

value

yer

friend

more'n

broomsticks or rats.

Tha's

all."

"What's

comin

' will come, an' we'll meet it when it does."

"Meant

ter

turn him into a pig, but I suppose he was so much like a pig anyway there wasn't much left

ter

do."

"

Yeh

did as much as

yer

father would've done, an' I can' give

yeh

no higher praise than that."

"

Gotta

bone

ter

pick with

yeh

. I've heard you've bin

givin

' out signed photos. How come I haven't got one?"

"

Yer

' great

puddin

' of a son don' need

fattenin

' anymore,

Dursley

, don' worry."

What is the most likely reason that the author uses this dialect?

a. to make

Hagrid

seem very different from the other characters

b. the author can't spell well

c.

Hagrid

is an idiot

d. it foreshadows that

Hagrid

is not to be trusted Slide5

22 solution

“A”

is correct.

Everything

about

Hagrid

is to make him different.  He's big, he has no fashion sense, he lives in a small house outside the castle, he can but doesn't normally use magic, he speaks differently from the others, etc.

Note that you do not need to have read or watched the movies to get this question correct.  The EOC will give you everything you need to know in the little blurb before the passage.Slide6

Bell ringer 23Read the following and determine the

tone

of the passage:

I can't believe it! My teacher was out yesterday and left a ton of work. I worked the whole class period and still had an hour worth of homework in order to finish it. Not only did she not pick up our work and give us a grade, she got a bad note from the substitute and decided to punish the whole class with even more work. Only two kids acted up, but we all had to pay the price. That is the last time I worry about doing the right thing!

T

he

tone of this

passage

is:

a. incensed

b. awestruck

c. happy

d. jaded Slide7

23 solution

Incensed

is the correct answer since it means very angry.

Awestruck

is incorrect, however, if you didn't know that it meant struck with a feeling of WOW! and instead thought that since it had the word "struck" it must be a negative word, then you have used a good strategy to figure out the meaning of the word. Unfortunately, it was still wrong. This is the best wrong answer.

Happy

is just plain the wrong answer.

Jaded

means that you are so used to something that it no longer excites you or disappoints you. Carolina fans are so used to winning that they are jaded and don't get too excited about wins like State fans do. Slide8

Bell ringer 24Look at the following panel from

Amazing Spider-Man

 #197:

Based

on the words that Spider-Man speaks, what might the quote be that the Kingpin is probably referring to in his first word balloon?

a."A

man is never more truthful than when he acknowledges himself a liar."

b. "A round man cannot be expected to fit in a square hole right away.  He must have time to modify his shape."

c. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

d. "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."  Slide9

24 solutiond.

is

the correct answer because Spider-Man says that he thought the Kingpin was dead, so the Kingpin refers to this quote.Slide10

Bell ringer 25Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is?

Read the following passage:

I was going to look for my missing watch, but I could never find the time.

This is an example of

:

a. allusion

b. alliteration

c. pun

d. ironySlide11

25 solutionc

is

the correct answer.Slide12

Bell ringer 26In Marvel comics, the oath that all Hydra agents take is:

"Hail, Hydra! Immortal Hydra! We shall never be destroyed! Cut off a limb, and two more shall take its place! We serve none but the Master—as the world shall soon serve us! Hail Hydra!"

What literary term is being used

here?

a

. metaphor

b. allusion

c. archetype

d. hyperboleSlide13

26 solutionThe answer is

b

.

allusion

It is a reference to the Greek myth of the hydra monster that Hercules fought.  Don't know your Greek myths?  Get on that this summer.  Not only are they fun to read, but mythology is fair game for allusions on any state test, the SAT, and the ACT.Slide14

The

Martian

In

the following passage from Andy Weir's novel

The Martian

, we have excerpts from the protagonist's daily journal that he is using to record his efforts to survive.  The protagonist has been stranded on Mars and presumed dead.  He is trying to keep the equipment he has running and generate enough food and water to keep him alive until someone can rescue him.  Read the following selection:

LOG ENTRY: SOL 36

I've now grown accustomed to hearing the alarms blare at all times.  The fire alarm has finally stopped, now that there's no more fire.  The low oxygen alarm should stop soon.  The high humidity alarm will take a little longer.  The water

reclaimer

has its work cut out for today.

For a moment, there was yet another alarm.  The water

reclaimer's

main tank was full.

Booyah! That's the kind of problem I want to have!     Remember the space suit I vandalized yesterday? I hung it on its rack and carried buckets of water to it from the reclaimer. It can hold an atmosphere of air.  It should be able to handle a few buckets of water.     Man I'm tired.  Been up all night, and it's time to sleep.  But I'll drift off to dreamland in the best mood I've been in since Sol 6.

Things are finally going my way.  In fact, they're going great!  I have a chance to live after all!

LOG ENTRY: SOL 37

I am screwed, and I'm going to die

!

What literary term is the author using to increase the intensity and suspense?

a. imagery

b. dramatic irony

c. foreshadowing

d. juxtapositionSlide15

27 solution

a

is

incorrect.  While there is some imagery involved, it is not being used to create suspense or intensity

.

b

is incorrect.  We do not know what the protagonist doesn't know

.

c

is incorrect.  While there may be some foreshadowing going on, we do not have enough of the text to see if it develops into anything.

d

is correct.

Juxtaposition is when change in two different scenes has meaning.  Here, we are all set up to think that things are finally working for him.  Then the next entry shows differently. Slide16

Bell ringer 28Read this excerpt from “The Bet” by Anton Chekhov.  The narrator was contemplating killing a man in an issue about money, but the man leaves the money and goes away:

“At no other time, not even after heavy losses on the stock exchange had he ever felt such contempt for himself as now. Back in his house he went to bed, but he was kept awake for a long time by excitement and tears.”

Which literary device is being demonstrated in the passage?

A. Internal conflict

B. Dialogue

C. Alliteration

D. SymbolismSlide17

28 solution

A.

The

banker is demonstrating that he is not happy with himself, but is quite “excited” the entire time. The opposite emotions demonstrate that he is conflicted.

I suppose I would also feel “excited” if the person that I was intending to kill in order to save myself some money had opted to just leave the money behind, thus freeing me from having to kill him. At the same time, I might just have to feel a little guilty about the fact that I was two seconds away from being a murderer. Yes, I think that internal conflict is shown.Slide18

Bell ringer 29

She had a boyfriend with a wooden leg, but she had to break it off.

This is an example of a(n

):

a. alliteration

b.  pun

c. hyperbole

d. personification Slide19

29 solutiona. is incorrect

alliteration

means repeating the same sounds at the beginning of words

b. is correct - a

pun

is a play on words.  Here,

break it off

has a double meaning that makes you think she may have needed to break his wooden leg, rather than break off the dating relationship

c. is incorrect - a

hyperbole

is an exaggeration used to make your point

d. is incorrect -

personification

gives something not human some human-like qualities ("The moon looks sad tonight," is an example.  The moon cannot look sad, it is a big hunk of green cheese floating in space)Slide20

Bell ringer 30Read the following passage:

We were watching this horror movie and saw the killer climb into the house through an open window, pick up a huge knife laying on the kitchen counter, and go into the closet of the little kids' room.  Later, the babysitter and her boyfriend (who is NOT supposed to be over) send the kids to bed.  Right as they are about to do things that should not be done by unwed teenagers, the little kids start crying that there is a monster in the closet.  The babysitter is frustrated and goes up to their room to make them go to sleep.  She says, there is no such thing as monsters.  To prove it, she went to the closet and opened the door.  Of course the killer leaped out and stabbed her to death.  It was very scary.

What

is the purpose of showing the killer enter the closet before the killings?

a. to provide specific details

b. to create enriching imagery

c. to create suspense

d. to develop the rising actionSlide21

30 solutionc. is the correct answer.

This

is called

dramatic irony

(we know something the characters do not know).  Since we know he is there, the suspense builds up waiting for the killer to attack

.
