Chapter 2: I Will Worship with Others

TWO TYPES OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

Individual Worship

It is the depth of our individual worship of the Lord that fuels corporate worship!

Slide4

TWO TYPES OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

Corporate Worship

One of the major functions of the local church is to worship the Lord—together!

Slide5

IN THE WORDS OF THOM

“True worship flows from the heart in recognition and response to the magnificence of Christ, and because of an understanding of the grace found solely in the gospel. Embracing these truths through the practical experience of daily living is imperative in our relationship with God. And while true worship always manifests itself in the individual’s response to the majesty God, true biblical worship manifests itself in experience with

other

believers as well” (p. 26).

Slide6

The Biblical Basis for Corporate Worship

Acts 2:46-47

“Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread form house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

Slide7

Characteristics of the Early Church’s Corporate Worship

Devotion “Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple”(Acts 2:46)

Joy “…with gladness of heart…praising God”(Acts 2:46-47)

Slide8

Characteristics of the Early Church’s Corporate Worship

Humility & Sincerity“…and sincerity of heart”(Acts 2:46)

Attention from the Lost “…and having favor with all people”(Acts 2:47)

Slide9

THE TERRIBLE SHIFT!

“Somewhere in the twentieth century believers, particularly in America, began to shift from an attitude of self-sacrificing service to God and worship of God, to consumer-focused,

self-serving

attitudes.

. . . the focus in too many of our church worship services is not on God.

We are focused on our own selves, our own needs, and our own preferences” (p. 30).

Slide10

“I Will” Attitudes of Corporate Worship

I will attend worship services.

I

will pray before I attend worship services.

I

will pray as I enter the worship center or sanctuary.

I

will pray that I will be a

worshipper

instead of a

judge

.

“How

lovely are your dwelling places, O Lord of hosts! My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living

God.”

(Psalm 84:1-2)
