Slide2The SUDEP and Seizure Safety Checklist:
A free evidence based clinical tool to support risk communication as part of any review of an epilepsy care plan or consultation
Includes 19 factors of risk and well-being and 41 key scientific references
Supported by a Development Group including UK-wide experts in the field
The Project is funded by SUDEP Action and the bereaved families who support them, to help people with epilepsy and their clinicians discuss & reduce epilepsy risks; with the hope that this helps reduce the number of lives lost to Epilepsy each year
It considers risk factors associated with epilepsy mortality, including (but not restricted to) Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP)
Slide3Why use the Checklist?
An estimated 1.16 per 1000 people with epilepsy die suddenly each year
Comparing years of potential life lost from neurological disease, epilepsy is second only to stroke
More people die from epilepsy than cervical cancer each year
The best protection against SUDEP & epilepsy-related causes of death is being aware of these risks & putting steps in place to improve known risk factors
Many people who died from epilepsy, (especially younger people) were not accessing health services prior to their death
Research showed PWE had worsening risk factors 3 months pre death & only 20% had medical contact 1 year prior to death
20%
Judicial inquiries can hold professionals accountable if an epilepsy death may have been avoided
National reports indicate 42% of epilepsy deaths are potentially avoidable
42%
Slide4How the Checklist came about:
The project was originally funded by
Kt’s Fund (formed in memory of a young student nurse, Katie, who died of SUDEP)
It was originally piloted across GP practices in Cornwall, improving risk communication rates to 80% (UK average is approx. 10%)
SUDEP Action and Cornwall Partnership NHS
FoundationTrust
are the Partners in the Checklist project
Version 1 of the Checklist launched in May 2015
Version 2 of the tool launched in Sept 2017
330+ Clinicians currently use the Checklist
