What is Voltage Optimisation?Slide4

What do the Experts say?

“A 230V linear appliance used on a 240V

supply will take 4.3% more current and will

consume almost 9% more energy …”

and

“… only achieve 55% of its rated life

Savings with Voltage Optimisation completely depends on the load the company has and therefore a full site survey is essential.Slide5

Reduce kWh

Reduce CO

CRC, CSR

Save money

In addition,

VO helps with

Targets, obligations, pressures…

Why is it important to optimise site voltage?Slide6

Reduces kWh Consumption

How does Voltage Optimisation help?Slide7

Will everything consume less energy?

NO not everything …

Greatest savings come from inductive loads (Motors, Lighting)

Some loads will yield less savings (VSDs)

Some loads will yield zero savings, but will benefit in other ways

It is important to understand the electrical loading characteristics of your site.

Remember no two sites are the sameSlide8

Optimise at HV side or LV side?

The diagram below shows a typical onsite plant room set-up, without any voltage optimisation technologies being utilisedSlide10

Guoman Hotels Group Ltd – Thistle Hyde Park

“So far the Powerstar installations in our hotels have achieved as much as an amazing 26.1% saving in total electricity consumption at our Thistle Hyde Park Hotel and elsewhere, never less than an 11.5% saving.

David Hannah, Head of Property, Guoman Hotels Group LtdSlide13

Department for Business Innovation & Skills

Seven Powerstar units were installed into BIS, the results of five of these installations are shown below. Two of the units currently have no data for savings as BIS changed the meter and have not had data since.Slide14

NHS – Ashworth Hospital

The hospital were looking for a reliable system to effectively reduce high energy costs and consumption caused by lighting, plant & IT equipment in the hospital.

Derby City Council is aiming to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2013/14 as part of a ‘Climate Change Strategy’.

The Council’s Eagle Centre market,

Environmental Services parks management depot

and the Market Hall have had Powerstars installed

“The installation of the Powerstar systems has

cut our energy cost by nearly 20%”

Chris Chisman, Engineering Manager, TEV Limited

Two Powerstar units creating a 125kVA system were installed at TEV to optimise the incoming supply to the factory. As a result an actual reduction in electricity consumption of 17.8% was achieved.

Civic Offices

Installed ~2008/9Large office building with considerable amounts of LF Lighting and various pumps, fans etc.

Paid for through corporate Invest to Save fundExpected 10% savingAchieved: uncertain as new data centre installed around the same time but very likely exceeded 10%

Has now been removed as building sold - will be relocated to suitable buildingSlide21

Oakengates Leisure Centre

Installed

200kVa unit in 2010

Leisure centre with large swimming pool with considerable amounts of LF Lighting and pool equipment including AHU, pumps, fans etcPaid for through Salix – 0% Loan

Expected annual saving of 32,000kWh (~9%) leading to 4 year paybackAchieved: uncertain as building extended at the same time. Likely exceeded 10%Slide22

Oakengates Theatre

Installed 288kVa unit in 2011Mixed use building. Primarily theatre but also children's centre. Large AHU unit with pumps, fans etc.Paid for through Salix – 0% Loan

Expected annual saving of 25,000 kWh (9.3% - guaranteed) leading to 5 year payback. Slide23
