Interprofessional teamwork (IPTW) is associated with a range of positive outcomes and is deemed beneficial for patients, professionals and service providers. Despite these recommendations interprofessional teamwork has remained elusive in practice. There is criticism of its arbitrary application across healthcare settings and a lack of understanding of the complexities and challenges therein. In 2001, the Irish Government published the Primary Care Strategy which placed IPTW central to the delivery of health and social care services in Ireland. However there is significant reporting related to the lack of progress in terms of embedding interprofessional teamwork in practice. Professionals were assigned to teams and membership assumed. Currently primary care team function is linked to clinical team meetings conducted and the attendance of General Practitioners (GPs). The aim of this study was to measure the levels of IPTW and to examine the factors which may have facilitated or inhibited teamwork progress within the setting. This was achieved in two phases, by measuring levels of teamwork using a survey tool designed for this study (phase 1) and exploring primary healthcare professionals experiences of the introduction and implementation of teamwork in the primary care setting by conducting interviews. .
