Influences on Government
Individual:
a person, you.
Interest Group:
people who are concerned with a particular issue or part of the government and who try to influence legislators to act in their favor.
Political Party:
an organization that seeks to gain power by electing members to public office so that their political ideas can be reflected in public policies.
Within these categories there are different groups (i.e. Republicans and Democrats)
Each group has different opinions about each issue.Slide5

Foreign & Domestic Policy
Foreign policy
=the nation’s overall plan for dealing with other nations
Diplomacy (relationships with other nations), alliances, and treaties.
Domestic Policy
=the nation’s plan for making laws and policies that impact ALL residents of the U.S.

Foreign Policy
The President and the Secretary of State are the nation’s primary foreign policy agents.
The President also sends Ambassadors in order to establish good working relationships with other countries.
They have certain goals:
1) National Security
2) Promoting peace
3) Spreading Democracy
4) Promoting International Trade

International Organizations
International Organizations serve as a way for nations to come together and work on problems between themselves and in the world.Slide10
NAFTA
=North American Free Trade Agreement
Allows trade among the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
NATO
=North Atlantic treaty Organization
A military and defense agreement among the governments of member nations (they will protect each other)
UN
=United Nations
Created to keep peace worldwide and develop friendly relationship among nations
WTO
=World Trade Organization
Created to promote trade and economic growth by lowering taxes and other trade limitations.
World Court
=International Court of Justice
Offers legal advice to the UN and handles international legal concerns such as boundary issues and debt payment.Slide11
How can individuals get involved?
Red Cross
= protects human life and health
NGO’s
= any organization that work independent of the government and work to help the poor, the environment, and many other things.
UNICEF
= United Nations Children’s Fund
We can donate our money or time to these organizations in order to help them accomplish their goals.Slide12

Conflicts
Military Conflict, trade issues, and violated agreements can lead to conflicts
.
Congress is the only branch that can declare war and approve spending on the military.
The President is designated as the Commander and Chief of the military.
Although he/she cannot declare war, the President can send troops to other countries…we just don’t call it war.
Korean War, Vietnam War, and Gulf War II are examples of this happening.Slide14
Examples:
International Incident- World War II
President Franklin Roosevelt said,
“Yesterday, December 7, 1941- a date that will live in infamy- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan…
“I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.”
