About Armentières

The town was entirely rebuilt after being destroyed in World War I, and its red brick buildings present a uniform appearance.

Armentières

was 3 km behind the battle line throughout most of World War I, and from April until October 1918 it was occupied by the Germans. During World War II the town was bombed and was again taken over by the Germans from May 1940 until September 1944.Slide4

About Lille

Lille is a city in the North of France. It is the capital of the ‘Nord de Calais’ region in France. 228,652 people live there. It was attacked by the Germans many times during the First World War. One of the most famous sights is the Lille Cathedral.Slide13

Then, of course, there’s the cheese, especially the “Vieux Lille” cheese, nicknamed the “Lille stinker” for its strong smell.

For desert, there is “

” (light or dark sugar made from sugar syrup), which is found in crème caramel (custards), the famous filled waffles, and "

babeluttes

Douai is a town in northern France. 552,682 people live there. There are many shops and businesses there but it used to be a coal region. The main businesses are metal products, car parts, glass, chemicals, and printing. Douai was on the western front in World War One.Slide20
