Slide2

IRENA plasma ion source for SPIRAL2

IRENA (Ionization by Radial Electron Neat Adaptation) prototype based on EBGP (Nitschke, LBL 1985).

Slide3

Tests of the IRENA plasma ion source

Design of a new extraction electrode translation + electrostatic very limited vacuum chamber fast confinement of the UCX target.

Ion source prototypes tested at ALTO off-line isotope separator.Important high voltage issues since the out-gassing of a

BeO target.Cannot operate over 20 kV even after many repairs .

Effective ionization efficiency should be better than

obtained from current measurements (≥ a few %).

Further planned developments

Design of IRENA for tests at ALTO and validation.
