LESSON PURPOSE
To identify to the student the common signs and symptoms of dehydration, hyponatremia and heat related issues. Slide3
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
List the five symptoms which are common to dehydration.
Describe the condition of hyponatremia.
Cite ways to prevent hypothermia.
List symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.Slide4
Dehydration
Should not be overlooked!Known to significantly affect body temperature and blood circulation.
Can increase the body’s core temp and decrease cardiac output.Slide5
Dehydration
Occurs when the body has exhausted all of its fluid reserves.Common symptoms:
Thirsty
Dry Mouth
Dark, Strong smelling urine
Lack of the need to urinate
Headache
CrampsSlide6
Dehydration
Prevention:
Drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.
Keep the water bottle on your bike filled.
Drink 8 – 10 oz. of water every half hour.Slide7
Hyponatremia
When the body has a very low blood sodium concentrate. Usually occurs with sweating and only replacing fluids with lots of water.
Common symptoms:
Nausea
Muscle Cramps
Disorientation
Slurred speech
ConfusionSlide8
Hyponatremia
Prevention:
Eat balanced meals
Drink water and a sports drink containing sodium
Eat sports food (energy bars, etc.) during rest stops
Its happening now
:
Eat salty foods
Chips, pretzels, etc.
Dill pickles
If it doesn’t get better seek medical attention ASAP!Slide9
Heat Exhaustion / Heat Stroke
Typically happens after dehydration.
The absence of sweat, high body core temp, nausea, headaches and hot dry skin.
Most serious form of Heat Exhaustion is Heat Stroke.
Delirium
Impaired consciousness
Convulsions
Hot dry skin
High body core temp.
Treatment: SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTIONSlide10
Hypothermia
Insufficient heat in the body’s core.
Level I
Loss of judgment because the brain is dulled by cold. Become confused, lost, drop gear, less coherent to others
Level II
Loss of fine motor skills, shivering
Level III
Uncontrollable shivering, confusion, loss of fine motor skills, numbness in extremities.
Level IV
Profound Hypothermia, brain loses gross motor coordination, body grows cold and rigid, pulse & resp. decrease, core temp is 10 deg’s below normalSlide11
Hypothermia
Prevention
Wear layered clothing that retains its insulating qualities when wet.
Remove layers before you heat up and put them back on before you cool down.
Drink plenty of fluids, but not alcohol.
Eat for sustained exercise and load up on complex carbs.
Pace your energy output.Slide12
