Literary Analysis - Session #2Slide2
Goal: I can pour my ideas into a specific essay structure to write my literary analysis.
When
we write a literary analysis, we use a specific structure, called an outline, and we insert our ideas into this outline. Slide3
Let’s review a fairy tale--The Three Little
Pigs
As we read
The Three Little Pigs, focus on the third little pig. How would you describe his character? What personality characteristics would you use to describe him? Annotate the text as we read.Slide4

an admirable
character.Turn and talk with your writing group about what your two reasons would be. (reasons would fill in “A” and “B”)

Active Writing Time-Character Analysis Flash-draft
Now that you have talked through your character analysis of the third little pig, in your Writer’s Notebook write a flash-draft of the entire essay.
Use your Character Analysis Outline we completed during the Mini-Lesson as your guide.
Use the same claim sentence: The Third Little Pig, in the fairy tale The Three Little Pigs, is an admirable character because A and because B.Review your handout taped in your Writer’s Notebook called “Things to Look for when Annotating a Mentor Text” for the items to include in your flash-draft. Think of this checklist as a recipe of what to include. If you forget an “ingredient”, your essay will not “taste” the way it’s supposed to taste . (In other words, your essay will not be complete.Slide11
Mid-Workshop Moment
Essay
body paragraphs
have beginnings, middles, and ends. The beginning of the body paragraph will have a transition that introduces the new reason. The middle will include the text evidence and some of the analysis or explanation. The end will include more analysis or explanation and restates the idea/reason you are writing about. The ending of the body paragraph might include phrases such as, “This shows…” or “This illustrates…”.
Reread to make sure you are writing in paragraphs and that each paragraph has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Slide12
