Grade Level: Kindergarten
Subject: Math
Topic: Subtraction
Setting: Learning CenterSlide3
Standards
K.OA 1
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
K. OA 2
Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.Slide4
Lesson Objective
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to solve subtraction problems within 10. Slide5
Anticipatory Set
I will activate prior knowledge and ask the students what they already know about subtraction.
I will then ask them what are some words that they know that tell them they need to subtract.Slide6
Materials
Brown Paper Bag
Plastic Eggs
WorksheetPencilSlide7
Procedure
Students will look at a problem on the worksheet.
They will then put the largest number, from the problem of eggs, in the “nest.”
Once they have done that, they will proceed to begin solving the problem.
On the worksheet the student will cross out a picture of an egg that is being subtracted. Every time they cross out a picture, they take an egg out of the nest. When they have taken away the number of eggs the problem tells them to, the student will write their answer of how many are left in the nest on the line provided. Slide8
Procedure Continued
If the students finish early, they can take another worksheet with blank equations and work with a partner.
The partners will create their own subtraction equations for each other and repeat the process. Slide9
Assessment
I will know that the students are able to solve subtraction problems within 10, because they will fill out the worksheet indicating that they are able to solve the problems provided. Slide10
Adaptations
Because Glenn has an Orthopedic Impairment (cerebral palsy), he uses speech to text software
to produce written work and has access to an Amanuensis.
In his current level of math performance, Glenn can understand the nature of the problems and express the equations on his laptop.
For this lesson, Glenn will be able to express the equations and their answers on his laptop using his speech to text software. Or he can use an Amanuensis and dictate his answers to them and have them cross out the eggs on the worksheet for him.
