Web Media
Understanding and analysis of key concepts
Slide2How do we critically evaluate web media?
The internet is home to billions of websites offering products, information and platforms to share with our fellow humans from all around the world.
As media students we need to be able to unpack these sites, evaluate what they are offering and think critically about what message the creators are trying to send us.
Today we will explore the key concepts that we can use to help us make meaning and understanding of websites.
By the end of todays lesson you will be ready to put these strategies into practice.
Slide3Key Concepts
The following key concepts act as filters through which we can critically respond to the information presented to us in the form of websites in this instance.
Media are Constructs
Created by an individual or group with a specific goal, purpose and opinion. The media product will be based on the creators “point of view”.
ASK: Who created this product?
What is it’s purpose?
What assumptions or beliefs do its creators have that reflect in the content?

The following key concepts act as filters through which we can critically respond to the information presented to us in the form of websites in this instance.
Audiences negotiate meaning
The meaning of a media product is created by the producer and it’s audience. Different audiences can take away different meanings from the same product. Different audiences could be age, gender, race or social status
ASK: How might different people see this media product differently?
How does this make you feel, based on how similar or different you are from the people portrayed in the media product

Slide5Key Concepts
The following key concepts act as filters through which we can critically respond to the information presented to us in the form of websites in this instance.
Media have commercial implications
Most media production is a business and is created for profit, powerful networks of corporations influence content and distribution. Even in cases where media content is not made for profit – such as
Youtube
videos or Facebook posts- the ways in which content is distributed are nearly always run with profit in mind.
ASK: What is the commercial purpose (how will it make money for someone) of this media product?
How does this influence the content and how it is communicated?
If no commercial purpose can be found, what other purpose might the media product have? Eg present a particular point of view or gain attention for a particular issue or event How do those purposes influence the content and how it is communicated?

Media have social and political implications
Media convey ideological messages about values, power and authority. Media has great influence on politics and forming social change. For example the news coverage and advertising can influence an audiences perception through bias, representation of world issues and selective editing.
ASK: Who and what is shown in a positive light? In a negative light?
Why might these people and things be shown in this way?
Who and what is not shown at all? What conclusion might audiences draw based on these facts?http://

The following key concepts act as filters through which we can critically respond to the information presented to us in the form of websites in this instance.
Each medium has a unique aesthetic form
The content of the media product will depend in part the nature of the medium. Film will present information slightly differently to a website or piece of artwork or photograph.
ASK: What techniques does the media product use to get your attention and to communicate its message?
In what ways are the images in the media product manipulated through various techniques? (
eg Lighting, camera angle, photo manipulation)
What are the expectations of the genre towards the subject? (eg print advert, website, music video)

Slide8Putting Learning into practice
In small groups choose a website to evaluate.
Using the Key Concept questions discussed in this PowerPoint evaluate the site you have chosen
Create a word document with your answers, include a screen shot of the webpage you are evaluating.
Document to be added to your portfolio
Your entry on the blog this week should be a reflection on how your opinion of the website you evaluated changed or was confirmed after answering the questions covered by the key concepts.
