- All the different ways that media texts can create meaning e.g. camera angle, costumes, music (stars wars)
Representation
- How the media represents events/stories/opinions. E.g. the Sun and The Guardian have different ways of re-presenting the same thing (Brexit) How people present themselves on fb may be different to reality.
Audience
- Who watches the media and why, studying the audience can help you understand why the media is presented in a certain way. E.g. Mojo is for older men and We love pop is aimed at girls
Institution
- Who makes the media. E.g. Documentary made by BBC compared to ITV, will have different ideologies and funding.

How the media chooses to portray something
The first image is aimed at an older audience who like music. Therefore the focus is more on the identity of Justin Bieber and his art. Whereas on the right the audience would most likely be younger girls and therefore the picture presents him as a cute idol.
