LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The learner will: The learner can 1 : 1. Understand the field of travel medicine . 1.1 Explain the meaning and scope of emporiatrics 1.2 Identify the main international and national guidelines and other sources of information about travel health . 2. Know about the physiological effects of long haul air travel . 2.1 Describe the effects on the body during long haul air travel . 2.2 Assess different ways of minimising the adverse effects of long haul air travel . 3. Be able to provide comprehensive travel advice on health for different global destinations . 3.1 Discuss the factors which should be included in a pr e - travel health risk assessment. 3.2 Justify the health promotion advice provided for one global destination . 1 Insert additional rows if more Assessment Criteria are required to evidence a Learning Outcome 2 Indicative Content 2 : 1. Understand contemporary issues in travel health 1.1 M eaning and scope of emporiatrics : Travel medicine or emporiatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention and management of health problems of international travelers; the field of travel medicine encompasses a wide variety of disciplines including epidemiology , infectious disease , public health , trop

2 ical medicine , high altitude physiolo
ical medicine , high altitude physiology , travel related obstetrics , psychiatry , occupational medicine , military and migration medicine, and environmental health . 1.2 Guidelines and sources of information : UK national databases e.g. immunization guidance (Green Book) , malaria guidance, NHS choices, drug guidan ce e.g. BNF, EMC ; USA Centre s for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - gove r nment body database including malaria advic e , CDC Health Information for International Travel 2016 - commonly known as the 'Yellow Book' , CDC Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine - Preventable Diseases - the Pink Book , National drug guidance - FDA , USP - NF . 2. Know about the physiological effects of long haul air travel 2.1 Physiological effects: reduced cabin pressure can lead to 5% reduction in blood oxygen level; circulatory and lymphatic drainage may become impaired; circadian rhythm disruption when crossing several time zones. 2.2 Minimising adverse effects: avoiding or minimising alcohol and caffeine consumption; eating only enough to avoid hunger and consume low salt, low fat, low sugar foods; drink plenty of water ; if prescribed, use melatonin to reset the sleep - wake cycle ; loose clothing. 3. Be able to provide comprehensive travel advice on health for different global destinations 3.1 Health risk assessment : past medical history e.g. allergies, medications; special conditions e.g. pregnancy , disability or handicap, immunocompromised state, recent surgery, recent cardiopulmonary or cerebrovascular event; immunization history; travel experience; nature of trip e.g. business/pleasure, urb

3 an or rural, length; travel style e.g.
