PESTEL Analysis- What and Why?

A PESTEL Analysis is a framework or tool to analyse and monitor the external environment or factors that have an impact on an organisation. The results of which identify threats/weaknesses which can be used in a SWOT analysis.

SWOT Analysis

Here/Now- List all strengths that exist now. Then list all weaknesses now.

What might be? All opportunities that exist in the future. Opportunities are potential future strengths. Then list all threats that exist in future. Threats are potential future weaknesses.

Plan of Action- Use your analysis to create an action plan address each of the four areas.

Develop operational plans- monitor, evaluate and revise plans. Slide8

Steps in Strategic Planning

Identify critical strategic issues or barriers.

Develop goals and detailed action plans for each strategic issue.

Maximise forces in favour and minimise forces against.

Monitor Action Plan- are objectives and aims being met. SMART targets.

Evaluate progress of achieving outcomes. Where are we? Where do we need to go next? Are we on target? What needs to change or be adapted?

Revise the plan as necessary.
