Descriptive Writing Example
The minute the sliding doors opened, I was hit with a freezing cold blast from the air-conditioning unit. Heading straight for the food court, the delicious aromas made my mouth water. A young boy ran past me, laughing as he shouted out insults to his less than amused older sister. As I stood in line, deciding what to have, veiled women in embroidered
abayas floated by, leaving their perfumed scent hanging in the air. Slide4
Paired Work
Now it’s your turn!In pairs, look at the picture on the following slide.
Make notes under the following headings: Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch and Taste.Slide5Slide6
Paired Work
Now that you have your notes, turn these into a piece
of descriptive writing.Aim to write around 100 – 150 words.Try to use all five senses in your writing.Remember: focus purely on bringing the setting to life. You DO NOT need to develop plot.EXTENSION: If you finish, choose another setting, make notes and write an individual description. Slide7
Swap your writing with another pair.
With your partner, read through what the other pair has written.
Write down two things they did well in their writing.Write down one thing they need to improve (make better).
When both pairs are finished, swap your feedback!
